<wens> wondering if there's value in bringing up the VICAP block in RK356x and RK3588? It would let folks use the camera interface without the ISP. Or is ISP porting already underway?

<CounterPillow> don't you need the ISP for pretty important stuff like debayering?
<wens> one could ask the sensor to do it if possible
<wens> or you could even do it in userspace

<mriesch> wens: vicap can sure be useful, although i am not sure about the value of having a camera sensor attached to it
<mriesch> there was a series once that adds support for the px30, with some changes it can be used for the rk356x as well
<mriesch> however, the mipi csi host was not supported by this series iirc
<mriesch> only the digital video port (dvp) part of it
<mriesch> then i believe for the rk3588 the vicap gains some importance altogether, because there are two isps and the vicap handles the inputs of the isps. i haven't looked at it in detail, though
<mriesch> wens: if you are interested in providing mainline support for vicap and/or isp on rk356x, please feel free to ping me. i have some patches that sort of work locally, but are hardly mainline material
