i recommend you switch your rootfs to something else and just try to mount your suspect partition from userspace

the only reason it's a crash is because that's your rootfs and it can't boot from anything else

yes, that's my next plan. should be able to just add a casefolded ext4 loopback file and try to mount that.

I think I got caught in a situation where the bisect pointed me at a different error and I fixed my config while trying to diagnose it - because I see it booting too. I updated the mailing list along with my config diff in case anyone cares but I don't expect them to.
