<dontyouloveshort> hi
<dontyouloveshort> what is the right hardware that just gets me x264/x265 hardware encoding, ive read the pi4 can not do x264 hw encoding - does this mean the cpu can handle x264 without problems?
<colo> dontyouloveshort, I never tried with a Pi4, but I guess that would depend a whole lot on the encoder configuration and expected/required performance.
<dontyouloveshort> oh, right. 4k or how the usual case seems to be 2160p at very high bitrates
<colo> I cannot imagine _encoding_ either of the two codecs at any of these resolutions work satisfactorily.
<dontyouloveshort> my bad...decoding
<dontyouloveshort> just want to watch nice pictures with nice sound :)
<LEBot> [slack] <CvH> rpi can handle FHD h264 decoding, not 4k h264
<colo> I've decoded high bitrate 1080p x265 on a Pi3 in software, so I guess the Pi4 will be able to do that just fine, even if you don't use the dedicated decoding accel.
<dontyouloveshort> so whos right, cvh or colo?
<colo> we are not contradicting each other I think
<dontyouloveshort> anyway it doesnt have to be a rpi4 - im happy with any new hardware, just dont want to put my new amd gfx card next to the screen to watch movies
<dontyouloveshort> ah, right
<dontyouloveshort> but i definitively want to use 4k
<colo> 4kp30 works on the Pi4, I think. never tried it, as I lack the display hardware.

<dontyouloveshort> ok thanks

<colo> if you only care for high performance decoding, it's probably best to get an Intel NUC or some similar smallish x86 system.
<dontyouloveshort> will be back later, thanks

<kb1rd> Hey, just wondering: if I configure network boot, can I have multiple systems boot using the same storage NFS?
<kb1rd> I.e, wouldn’t running multiple instances of Kodi off the same network share encounter problems? Or can I set that to read only and prevent settings changes?

<mack> kb1rd: netboot is configured with unique client storage disk for settings. All clients can share the boot storage, assuming they're the same arch.
<mack> example:https://github.com/LibreELEC/LibreELEC.tv/pull/621
<oblikoamorale> client specific storage may be customized by providing different pxelinux configs based on mac, that's how I do it

<mack> heh. I should have read that PR more carefully. I assumed that's what it was doing.
<oblikoamorale> and yes, running multiple LE instances pointing to a single kodi storage partition is not a good idea. and I don't think kodi will start with user storage mounted as r/o

<kb1rd> <oblikoamorale> "and yes, running multiple LE..." <- Hm would it be possible to have a ram disk or something?
narf has joined #libreelec
<oblikoamorale> maybe it's possible to look into configuring overlayfs over r/o kodi storage partition, if you don't need runtime changes to persist

<mack> "oblikoamorale: and yes, running multiple LE instances pointing to a single kodi storage partition is not a good idea." <- You're talking about a boot partition here, right? There's no problem running multiple clients on a single *kodi* storage (aka Sources) and even r/o. They just need to be configured to use MySQL db.
<mack> I'm assuming you know this since you said you're netbooting clients by MAC.
adema has left #libreelec [Leaving]
<kb1rd> Oh wait Kodi can use a SQL server? Awesome problem solved…
<kb1rd> Yeah I’ll just run a DB server in docker or smth and use WireGuard. I’m iPXE booting for reference
<kb1rd> Thanks for the help
<mack> kb1rd: you'll still need a r/w share for each client to save settings (and containing the advancedsettings.xml for configuring the db connection. One OS/system share and one mysql/mariadb can be shared among the netboot clients.
<kb1rd> mack: But if it’s not RW will it fail to start or just fail to save settings? Because I can always start a VM with special RW access, but have most nodes just RO.
<mack> I've never tried :) Probably just not save settings since LE is a RO system already.
<kb1rd> I’ll mess around with it later ;) thanks for all the help
<oblikoamorale> mack: I'm talking about shared /storage mount. personally I've never tried running LE on r/o /storage, and I probably never will :p
<oblikoamorale> good point about using sql server though
