<midfavila> you know, i have to wonder what people are gonna do when rms dies
<midfavila> obviously there's some bias on my part because he's a prominent figure but i feel like he's one of the few people who are still
<midfavila> like
<midfavila> actively fighting for the ideals of free software in the public limelight
<midfavila> sure there's a loose federation of nerds on irc and matrix and shit who'll keep it up but how effective will that be versus microsoft, ibm, etc?

<midfavila> the r01 has just finished compiling perl
<midfavila> it took
<midfavila> approximately 3.5 hours
<midfavila> how long do you guys think it's gonna take to build gcc on the r01? :^)
<sewn> what is a e01
<midfavila> the risc-v SoM i'm porting kiss to
<midfavila> very... very... *very* slowly
<midfavila> it's from clockwork pi
<midfavila> i've got one in a uconsole
<midfavila> little handheld computer. looks like a cross between an overgrown TI-84 and a gameboy
<midfavila> super great little device. i'm replacing my android with it once i have an image up
<midfavila> i've already figured out how to place phone calls and SMSes, set up a WWAN connection, and bridge that connection to AP-mode WLAN on board the SoM for a hotspot mode
<midfavila> combine that with finch for discord/tg/irc/xmpp/matrix/whatever else you use for IM and that's probably most of what the average techie uses their phone for
<midfavila> i need to write some software to implement a sqlite backend for SMSes though. and a menu-driven interface. the keyboard is serviceable but it's not ideal so i'd like to minimize its use in regular operation
<midfavila> needs like 100gf to actuate
<midfavila> i'll also probably be porting tinyx to risc-v. i doubt it'll be hard. last time i ported it to an unsupported architecture it was just a matter of defining a few variables
<midfavila> although most of what you might need to do on a regular basis can be done pretty easily on the r01 from the tty. fbv for image viewing, fbpdf for pdfs, fbterm for a decent experience with AA'd fonts, etc
<midfavila> links or lynx for browsing
<midfavila> i've been trying to figure out a good way to get multimedia working. mplayer works but it's slow as shit because mplayer. mpv doesn't have an fbdev backend because sdl2. ffmpeg works in theory but in practice the vendor image is like 3 major releases behind so it lacks some commands that would be important
<midfavila> for audio though it works great
