<phlebas> re irc vs discord - a bunch of other communities i follow also just bridge discord to irc. it works well enough, so if it's a concern that irc doesn't get enough core dev eyes anymore, we can also do that
<fangerer> any idea how to do that?
<Hodgestar> I'm a bit -1 on bridging. It seldom works smoothly, and it creates a situation where one is posting messages to and getting replies from people one wasn't aware were part of the conversation.
<phlebas> fangerer: I use matterbridge for that for the servers I admin
<phlebas> Hodgestar: reasonable. I wouldn't do it right away anyway, but if we get the feeling that the split forum isn't working, I would rather try it than lose interested people
<Hodgestar> Agreed.
<Hodgestar> I am very aware of Discord's downsides, but I'm also aware that getting a smooth IRC setup is too much of a pain for most people (and to be fair, it took me like a decade to settle on Quassel and that still requires me to have my own machine somewhere to run the server part on).
<Hodgestar> E.g. Discord's 57 Channels per Topic structure kills many conversations. The same happens with forums like Discourse though.
<ronny> i tend to only ever use irc via matrix bridges these days, bridges are a pain for anything thats not nativey supporting them
