<davidrysk[m]>
Heh, that would have been me, and it wasn't exactly obvious from the activity on the repo, so apologies for that
<davidrysk[m]>
(Now, with the blog post, it's extremely obvious)
<josHua[m]>
I tried not to name you by name here! 🙂 I appreciate you now redirecting folks without bugging me about it, though.
<davidrysk[m]>
Hah it's okay, it's good to own up to our mistakes imo 🙂
<davidrysk[m]>
Funnily enough, everyone except DJI moved to better solutions when asked. DJI seems to be shipping that fork of HoRNDIS. 😡
<davidrysk[m]>
* Funnily (more like aggravatingly) enough, everyone except DJI moved to better solutions when asked. DJI seems to be shipping that fork of HoRNDIS. 😡
<josHua[m]>
wait they forked it? that's pretty funny
<davidrysk[m]>
No, some other person forked it and fixed some bugs, and they're shipping that person's version
<davidrysk[m]>
I don't think that person has anything to do with them either.
<josHua[m]>
I guess that's where these people got the idea to csrutil disable.
<davidrysk[m]>
I helped maintain that 360Controller driver for a while, and well... that seemed to lead to way more support requests and still does. And basically everyone who significantly contributed to it... got hired by Apple 🙃
<davidrysk[m]>
Similar sort of mess, but was never stable enough to be widely distributed, though I think at one point Valve might have
<davidrysk[m]>
But yeah I very strongly consider the nature of the open source these days
<davidrysk[m]>
Is it something that is likely to get co-opted by someone who's lazy or has a profit motive? Then maybe I shouldn't open source or maybe shouldn't even bother in the first place
<davidrysk[m]>
I am not at all surprised.
<davidrysk[m]>
their installer (even recent ones) dumps the kext in /Library/Extensions; I suspect they pop this up to the user after installation
<davidrysk[m]>
I'm not particularly willing to install the software to find out.

The answer from Crowd Supply was "We ship all orders complete, meaning once every item in your order is in stock, your order will ship to cut down on shipping costs". And indeed that seems to be the 2024 ordering policy (no "ship separately" option at checkout now).
<ewenmcneill[m]>
They offered to charge me even more for shipping cases shipped separately. Which I've declined. Having already paid more (US$28) in shipping than the current "everything is combined shipping" charges (US$18), back in 2020. I've pointed out I already "paid more" for separate shipping, but I don't have much hope.
<ewenmcneill[m]>
So I guess my cases will ship once the non-earlybird Glasgows are assembled and sent to CrowdSupply 😕
<nemanjan00[m]>
I do have a case in separate order
<esden[m]>
My rotary converter decided to blow sparks
<galibert[m]>
Yay 4th of July
<esden[m]>
I ordered replacement parts over night. They did not arrive on Saturday but on Monday. In the meantime time I also found out that the main contractor welded itself in closed position
<esden[m]>
There is a smaller contractor behind the PCB too
<esden[m]>
Even the simplest device can hide surprising complexity 😉
<josHua[m]>
indeed!
<josHua[m]>
I guess I wondered what component stored enough energy that it could weld a contactor. on the other hand, there have been the interesting stories of the Electrify America FCDC stations that periodically emit a large 'bang!' and a puff of smoke, and then weld their charge cables to the cars (and then trip the protection on the car's HV battery, killing it permanently)
<esden[m]>
The American rotary machine has a monitor circuit that promises to provide a more stable output
<esden[m]>
One more photo of the converter nook for your viewing pleasure 😉
<whitequark[cis]>
very chonk
<whitequark[cis]>
* very chonky
<galibert[m]>
Much power
<galibert[m]>
So amps
<SnoopJ>
such bzzzt
<whitequark[cis]>
oh that's a lot of amps
<esden[m]>
25hp is the units rating.
<josHua[m]>
that is quite a bit for such a small package
<josHua[m]>
back in undergrad the elevators were relay driven and also driven from a pair of big rotary converters. if that is 25hp I wonder what each of these was rated for.
<gruetzkopf>
the only application where i have seen rotary converters is track occupancy detection (which for two out of like 20 different methods used in germany uses 100Hz 3Ph AC when used on electrified routes)
<esden[m]>
They are not common in Europe because 3 phase power is relatively easy to get by. In the US they are very common, because they are much cheaper than a solid state solution, it allows supplying multiple loads with 3 phase power, and 3 phase power is far from common. It is possible to ask the Utility to install a 3 phase transformer but that is roughly 5x the cost of an equivalent rotary converter. (and that is in my case where the utility is
<esden[m]>
citizen owned and does not gauge on prices)
tem01[m] has joined #glasgow
<tem01[m]>
Will they even run 3 phase to you? My lines are buried so I'm pretty sure if I asked eweb it would be "lol no"
<esden[m]>
They offered to install a second transformer to give my a Y 3 phase.
<russss>
I'm sure anything is possible for a price
<tem01[m]>
Oh nice
<esden[m]>
I think they quoted me something around 15k for that pleasure.
<esden[m]>
A proper delta 3 phase supply would have been much more than that. I did not even ask how much.
<tem01[m]>
Sheesh. Then again, even electrical work I think should be cheap is always expensive.
<tem01[m]>
Once you get inspectors out and everything
<esden[m]>
Yeah we usually do all the electrical work ourselves and get the inspector out to sign it off. Saves a ton of money.
<esden[m]>
(usually get a nice pat on the back for a job well done, so that is nice)
<tem01[m]>
Allegedly, all the work done on my house was like that when I got there.
<esden[m]>
LOL! >_> I know right?
<esden[m]>
It is not always possible. Some things need to be signed off... :/
<tem01[m]>
Yeah. I haven't touched where it enters my property (I can't access the disconnect)
<tem01[m]>
Nor do I want to
<esden[m]>
For example if you want the EV charger incentive... they need the piece of paper >_<
jstein has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<esden[m]>
which gobbles up part of the charger incentive.
<tem01[m]>
Good point. Same for a mini split hvac
<esden[m]>
(ok sorry we are now really in the off topic weeds :D)
