mecodegoodsomeday (@_discord_263434076772499456:catircservices.org) so the current status is the following. My consulting work took way longer than I expected and only managed to finish it early this month. Since then I made a lot of progress and was able to start assembling the back sides of Glasgows.
<esden[m]>
The moment when I was ready to assemble the top sides, disaster struck and my 3phase rotary converter decided to blow its power switch.
<esden[m]>
I have replacement parts on the way, and if everything goes well I might be able to get the machine back up and running this weekend.

<galibert[m]>
yup, that's "blown" color all right
<esden[m]>
My goal is to get 200 Glasgows shipped to Mouser next week. 🤞 And to write an update including a proper timeline. As by that point I will finally have a production rate I can extrapolate from.
<galibert[m]>
you have own many on order, a couple thousand?
<galibert[m]>
s/own/how/
<esden[m]>
1800 units need to be shipped to fulfill what CrowdSupply ordered from us. Backers are somewhere around 1k units.
<galibert[m]>
well, that's gonna take a while then :-)
<esden[m]>
The biggest time sink will be the soldering of the through hole components. I am really curious what the rate on that will be. At the moment I only have the rate for how many back sides we can assemble.
<galibert[m]>
connectors are through hole?
<esden[m]>
And that is hovering somewhere around 160units an hour. So I should be able to rip through the back side assembly in a few days.
<mecodegoodsomeda>
160/hour - wowza!
<galibert[m]>
160/hour? Things are nice when they're working nominally :-)
<esden[m]>
yeah 40 panels * 4 boards an hour
<esden[m]>
see the above video 😄
<galibert[m]>
it's not a video?
<esden[m]>
lol ... ok yes
<esden[m]>
Discord is being great 😄
<mecodegoodsomeda>
Thanks for the update -- I'm getting excited (again!)
<galibert[m]>
on the element side it's two jpegs
<esden[m]>
Ok, attempting to send the video again.
<galibert[m]>
esden: heh, you're going to make me buy an expander and il will be Entirely Your Fault[tm]
<mecodegoodsomeda>
that's a video!
<esden[m]>
I hope the rotary converter explosion was just the power switch. I did also order a replacement control board for it just in case. And I also hope it is not something more severe, so wish me luck that I will be able to get it back up and running.
<esden[m]>
And yes, when the machine works as it is supposed to things go quite fast. 🙂

How many heads are on that? 4?
<galibert[m]>
no video on the matrix side, but it's there on discord
<galibert[m]>
how does it work, there's something before that to puts paste on, thats the pick&place, and then it goes in an oven?
<esden[m]>
There are 4 through hole parts on the board. Two of the IO headers, the reset switch and the sync connector.
<esden[m]>
so 45 solder joints per board
<galibert[m]>
I guess you don't have wave soldering available?
<esden[m]>
I do not.
<galibert[m]>
you'll need such a machine once you're a millionaire
<esden[m]>
I got some JBC solder tips that are made to solder connector pins quickly. And based on some preliminary experiments it should be possible to solder one board in under a minute.
<galibert[m]>
Beware of RSI
<esden[m]>
I mean a selective soldering machine could do the job here. But It is also an investment I did not pull the trigger on.
<esden[m]>
I want to get some help with that hand soldering to spread the load.
<galibert[m]>
sounds like a good idea
<esden[m]>
In any case, this will likely be the bottle neck.
<esden[m]>
Which I think will still be managable, if not... well we will have to figure something out. 😛

<vegard_e[m]>
have you made a jig to hold the parts in place until they get soldered down?
<esden[m]>
Ahh yes, I did make a jig.
<esden[m]>
It is very useful and makes the soldering much easier, we can then also have an assembly line where one person stuffs the connectors another solders and what not.

I am given to believe that local mobile phone repair shops end up being decent THT and SMD rework lab techs in a pinch
<whitequark[cis]>
yep
<whitequark[cis]>
if you have any, that is (doesn't seem like the US has any)
<josHua[m]>
we do-ish
<duskwuff[m]>
ish, but most of them don't do component-level repair
<esden[m]>
I have not used any of those places. But there are some Luis Rossmann type of operations around.

i love that little dancing/tickling sound it makes while putting all the parts down
<esden[m]>
Heh yeah, it is the pcb ringing 😄
<whitequark[cis]>
oh is there a video?
<galibert[m]>
You can see it on the discord side
<whitequark[cis]>
that is so weird, why'd that not forward...
<whitequark[cis]>
i mean i cannot cause i have the discord side turned off
<whitequark[cis]>
so it probably expires in a hour or something.
<josHua[m]>
that matches the upload ts
<josHua[m]>
I think

Discord switched it's CDN from permanent links (just know the URL) to temporary links (ie, with time expiring auth parameters) recently (online references I can find suggest "around end of 2023"). The original suggestion was they'd be links valid for 24 hours, but it wouldn't surprise me if the links are valid for only an hour.
