This could be more flexible for running designs at different clock rates (if required).

16:02 <electronic_eel> @dsp8bit "just" a i2c programmable clock generator won't help you for receiving data at another clock speed. because the additional clock signal fed into the fpga has to be kept in sync with the external clock over a longer time without drift.
