I think there is definitely the group who just wants “standard” terminal emulator which just works who have just been setting TERM=xterm-256color because it works via ssh with zero setup
<sterni>
that user group would definitely stay happy with the ncurses foot entry
<Arnavion>
I'm one of those users now, but I'm planning to switch to TERM=foot* when ssh config adds support for SetEnv TERM=
<sterni>
I would definitely be one of them if I wasn't mostly using mosh

<sterni> "that user group would definitely..." <- Foot works fine on my machine locally ofcourse but I just end up doing export TERM=Linux in my .bashrc

It annoys me that I told him how to fix it, he did so silently without responding to my email, but still made a typo
<dnkl>
Yeah, saw that. Found it... Disturbing
<Arnavion>
Also, I was going to test tmux against the ncurses definition, so I installed my distro's package that ought to have the ncurses definition, except it doesn't have them, because the maintainer of the package added the patch but also has a list of which definitions go into the package, and they didn't add foot there
<Arnavion>
I'm ready to burn down the concept of terminfos to the ground
<dnkl>
You and me both
<dnkl>
We definitely need something new, that isn't tied to a single project
<Arnavion>
And so, I *could* tell the maintainer to add foot to the list. Or I *could* just change foot to install the terminfos as "foot" and hope no one notices, which will solve all our problems
<Arnavion>
You can guess which one I'm leaning towards
<dnkl>
Arnavion: :D
<ifreund>
someone should start the X11->Wayland movement equivalent for terminal emulators
<dnkl>
Arnavion: it's definitely an alternative distributions can choose. I think sterni will do something similar for nix. Except there they can ship ncurses foot terminfo, but have ours override it if users choose to install it
<dnkl>
ifreund: one terminal developer and one application developer could probably create something decent. Too many and there's likely to be just bikeshedding...
<ifreund>
dnkl: yeah, it would have to start very small and get almost entirely stable before it gets bogged down by the masses

dnkl: yes, that's what I'm doing although thanks to foot setting TERMINFO I can just avoid installing the terminfo in most cases (locally)
<sterni>
I just hope that TERMINFO takes precedence over TERMINFO_DIRS…
