<noobaroo>
I'm perplexed that with libjxl, a distance of 0.0 outputs a smaller file than 0.1 does
<noobaroo>
anyone know why?
<noobaroo>
I'm guessing, in extremely simple terms here, that a new mode of some sort is switched on with lossless encoding and it uses different algorithms

noobaroo: yeah, jpeg-xl has two modes - modular and VarDCT. In most cases you'll get VarDCT with lossy, and lossless forces modular.
<kepstin>
you can force modular encoding when doing lossy encoding if you want, it does get better compression on some images.

<jarthur>
Is there a priority to codec_list? I was looking at Chromium's webrtc, which performs avcodec_find_decoder(AV_CODEC_ID_H264) and I was curious if it would always use the built-in H.264 decoder by default, or if it could happen to chose libopenh264 decoder, or an nv one.

<BtbN>
the internal order determines what's found first
<jarthur>
BtbN thanks, and how is the internal order determined?
internatetional has joined #ffmpeg
<BtbN>
by someone writing it into the code. literally
<jarthur>
So the order of the externs in allcodecs.c?
dreamon has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]
<jarthur>
That's the only code where I can see them referenced with anything resembling an order.

noobaroo: I use jpeg-xl fairly often, but only still images with the cjxl tool provided by libjxl (haven't used ffmpeg for it yet)
