For mp4 container `-movflags +faststart` is there a way for it to write the moov atom first? by default it waits until the video is done and then moves it

I'm having problems using the -shortest output option, it does not make the output video the length of the shortest input. I am using a single stream video file, and an mp3 file as input

v6.0.1 from deb-multimedia, and a fresh compile as per the ffmpeg wiki

A command like this "ffmpeg -i shortvideo_no_audio.mkv -i longaudio.mp3 -codec copy -shortest shortvideo_with_some_audio.mkv"

-shortest works on 4.4.1 on Slackware15, and debian 12's stock ffmpeg (IIRC 5.1.4) also works

that was added in 6.0 so maybe some default behaviour changed

that doesn't seemed to have helped, and when values got big the video seemed to get truncated or froze

default for -shortest_buf_duration is 10s, tried 20, 30 and at 60 and 90 is gave messages like [matroska @ 0x55e9b102e000] Starting new cluster due to timestampate= -0.0kbits/s speed=N/A

tried setting the -shortest_buf_duration low too, to just 1, and same thing: output video 15mins, with a 2min video stream and 15min audio.

I have worked around my problem, swapped -shortest on the output for -t $(ffprobe input.vidonly.mkv 2>&1 | grep DURATION | sed -e 's/.* : //')
