@jaeger sorry to bother you i fell asleep and you were kind enough to message me. I got dwm to "work" but I am having trouble getting keyboard and mouse input in to the session. what is the typical service to facilitate this? I saw your post on the docs that pointed to udev running the service and from my understanding that should get launched by
<bubblesweet>
the rc system but should there also be a file in rc.d? Sorry to be a bother
<jaeger>
Generally you don't need to mess with udev, I would suspect something else like libinput or missing kernel support
<jaeger>
Do you have libinput and xorg-xf86-input-libinput installed?
<bubblesweet>
I have both of those installed just checked
<bubblesweet>
is there a specific kernel feature i should be looking for? again sorry to be a bother am noob <3
<jaeger>
Hrmm... have you configured xorg manually or let it try to autodetect devices?
<jaeger>
That depends a lot on your devices. If they're just standard usb stuff then you probably already have the right stuff enabled, but if you have for example an unusual touchpad or something, maybe not
<jaeger>
Can you post your Xorg log file to pastebin.com or similar?
lavaball has joined #crux
<bubblesweet>
i am trying to get it working on a thinkpad before i swap my desktop to crux haha. I can try and get a pastebin up for you here in a moment thanks so much!
<jaeger>
Usually thinkpads are very well supported, though maybe it depends on which model
<bubblesweet>
I have an old x1 extreme gen2 if im not mistaken
<bubblesweet>
Here is the ouput when i try to do Xorg -configure
<jaeger>
And what does the xorg.conf.new file that it generates contain?
<jaeger>
I'm not seeing anything in that log about specific input devices like mouse and keyboard details, might need a real session log
<bubblesweet>
it didnt give me one bc it said the # of screens didnt match number of detected devices and closes that log
<jaeger>
Didn't you say you had a dwm session running but without input? What changed since then?
<bubblesweet>
oh ill snag that one too sorry
<jaeger>
Also, is your user in the 'video' group? That "Failed to open DRM device" error might be indicative of a permissions issue (or possibly missing kernel driver)
<jaeger>
I need to go run a couple of errands, will be back in a bit
<bubblesweet>
ah so i cleared my xorg.conf and now keyboard works working on trackpad now :)
<jaeger>
Looks like good progress
<jaeger>
The internet indicates that the touchpad on that model thinkpad is PS/2 rather than USB, usually not much to get those working. I didn't see anything about it in the xorg log, do you see it with 'libinput list-devices' ?
<bubblesweet>
yeah i looked that up actually and when i went through menuconfig i tabbed ps2 out bc i am dumb
<bubblesweet>
I am so sorry for wasting your time
<bubblesweet>
rebuilding kernel now
<bubblesweet>
thats embarrassing for me but thank you for the help!
<jaeger>
Ah, no worries. Think we've all done something like that before
<jaeger>
It's nice when it's a simple problem
<bubblesweet>
I was way too tired last night and pulled an oops... i just realized where i read your name too... youre a kind maintainer i appreciate it very much
<jaeger>
Glad to help :)
