remiliascarlet: could you suggest port with generic (non-fancy) Japanese font for Firefox? I guess it should be TTF. xorg-font-jis-misc works in terminal, but doesn't work in Firefox.

After downloading the entire folder (which can be a pain in the ass), simply run linux.sh as root. Or openbsd.sh if you're on OpenBSD.

remiliascarlet: That would install fonts bypassing package management system. I'd like to avoid that. Unfortunately, 'ttf-noto' from 'contrib' has no CJK fonts.

In that case, you can take a look at /usr/ports/contrib/ttf-noto/Pkgfile, copy it to your own ports collection, modify it to include CJK fonts, and now you got it the package manager way,

To me, fonts are really just .ttf, .ttc, .woff, or something else files which can easily be managed without a package manager.
