jaeger: Linux kernel applies patches to external PHY. Without those patches, network RX/TX operations might be unstable. Check https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9824565/ as an example of such patch. It is not related to igb, but igb might have similar patches for its PHY devices.
<jaeger>
Yeah, I've read about some of those, just never experienced this with ipxe before, and we have a LOT of servers with identical hardware
<SiFuh>
ukky: Tht's why jaeger is slow to reply, lost of packet losses. Hahahaha Just kidding
<ukky>
at work we use PHYs in baremetal applications and if we don't apply patches to PHYs, we basically don't have a functional network.
<ukky>
you have to find which PHY your igb has and check which patch Linux kernel applies.
