blathijs: I've never needed to modprobe spidev, so something is broken
<zmatt>
I think normally it gets loaded by compatible="spidev" matching alias: spi:spidev
<zmatt>
it would probably be nicer if rcn-ee were to add "spidev" to the spidev_dt_ids arrays in the spidev driver (iirc this is what the raspberry pi kernels do)

zmatt: I'm using the included BB-SPIDEV0-00A0.dtbo overlay, which uses compatible = rohm,dh2228fv insteadf of compatible = spidev, because indeed, AFAIK mainline linux does not want generic compatible strings, so everybody abuses this specific device compatible string to get a spidev. And indeed, I think rpi kernels do add the generic compatible string, possible bbb kernels too (IIRC there is also
<blathijs>
an spidev alias, but I do not have the board handy at hand now).
