[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> An image that I've pulled from the sd card has 4MB of unallocated storage before the main ext4 partition and 230Mb of unallocated space after. After making a copy, resizing the partition and truncating the image file to fit on a new sd card that is slightly smaller (despite both advertising as 32GB), I then had problems running gparted on the resulting image hwen it was flashed t <clipped message>
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> o the sd card and e2fsck was setting a lot of inodes' i_size to 0. Did I mess something up? DId the unallocated space at the end of the image have something meaningful? How the hell does that affect the ext4 filesystem that I resized properly *before* truncating the image? So weird. The system was running on an OrangePi PC, I think it was based off of some buster image at the tim <clipped message>
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> e and I just kept upgrading the packages, if that matters in terms of knowing the bootloader setup or smth.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> The e2fsck actually processes so many inodes and prompts their i_size to be set to 0 that my terminal's buffer barely keeps up and gparetd freezes

[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> First time dealing with something like that
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> I know that starting wit ha fresh image would probably be better, but I already have set up so much stuff over the years and used to it by now that I just want to fix this image and keep going until I can do a proper migration to new hardware

[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Although I think u-boot is placed at the beginning of the partition, not the end. And unallocated space after the partition shouldn't affect ext4 e2fsck...
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Trying again
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> This time the image itself works and has no e2fsck trying to erase all of it

[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Huh, weird, I get a different partition size when I write the image to the sd card than when I use it in a loop device:
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> ```
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> /dev/loop0p1 8192 55789567 55781376 26.6G 83 Linux

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> ```
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> That's with `dd if=/img_file.img of=/dev/sde status=progress`, now I'm trying to copy from the loop devcie directly

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> fsck on the loop device has no isssues
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> And e2fsck too

<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> And it's weird that `fsck` and `e2fsck` give different results even though `fsck` was supposed to be calling `e2fsck`
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Although, I do use different flags
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> `e2fsck -f -y -v -C 0` (this is what gparted uses mandatorily)
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> RoyK: don't minimal images use systemd-networkd by default?

[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> I need a crapton of new sd cards I guess
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <igorpec> yeah, if you can get hands on those, get some https://amzn.to/3ZnNBee
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> well, amazon isn't available in my country and not all marketplaces have good trust. My last buy was a couple of 32GB sd cards from smartbuy I used to test bigtreetech images, bought from a reliable retailer in-person. Even though my dada promised to bring some moew 32gb sd cards, I doubt they are of high enough quality.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Yeah, no writes to teh sd card work, can't even put a new partition table on it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> I'll stock up on 4 32GB cards like these but I'm not used to them being so expensive, about 15 usd a piece, I'm used to that being about half the price

[Discord] <menu> nah SD cards do this sometimes, convert it to GPT with fdisk and it should fix it
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Nope, this doesn't alter anything on the sd card
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> It just seems to be ignoring any writes
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> is it overheated? have you remounted it (physically)?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Yes, it has been sitting on my desk and it's room tremperature, then I plugged it in to test you suggestion
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> it'd be a shame if you've killed the card
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> you *did* use the write command in fdisk before quitting right?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <johnthecoolingfan> Yes
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <menu> it's a mistake i have made many times
