[Discord] <sdubovsky> Hi Rockchip people! I know it's a long shot, but I am trying to use the WaveShare DSI LCD: https://www.waveshare.com/2.8inch-dsi-lcd.htm with BTT CB2 board. I wonder if we have any solution here for the Armbian/RK3566. They seems to have pretty good support for the RPi, but not much else: https://github.com/waveshare/Waveshare-DSI-LCD

[Discord] <mecoblock> @rpardini what was the reason you reverted g21p0 to g18p0 on the vendor 6.1 kernel?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <rpardini> I've no idea what those are, so I'm surprised you think I done such thing. Could you point me to it?

[Discord] <c133> so I installed linux-image-current-rockchip64-edge (6.8.11) on my Rock 5B, and I've been getting kernel panics if I `rsync` a large enough file to a local disk
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> dont use that kernel if you need functionality. current on rk3588 is kind of special
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> unfortunately rockchip64-current instead of -edge fails to bring up eth0 for me, which is kind of problematic since I'm netbooting
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> If you want bleeding edge and mainline go for 6.10. If you want stuff working use vendor 6.1
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> I also tried building myself a 6.10 prerelease kernel with Alexey's latest cpufreq patchset
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> so I installed `linux-image-edge-rockchip64` (6.8.11) on my Rock 5B, and I've been getting kernel panics if I `rsync` a large enough file to a local disk
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> sorry, I typed in the name of the package wrong. I meant I was using linux-image-**edge**-rockchip64
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Hm I guess you are on stable repo and that 6.8.y package is the most recent edge one?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> I did install it a few days ago. I saw a newer 6.9.5-based edge kernel was in the repo before I ran `apt update` just now
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Hm. Anyway I think you can pull 6.10 edge from beta repo if you want. Regardless in terms of functionality _vendor_ is still the way to go.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Unrelated fun fact: 6.9.y _edge_ does not work on radxa zero 3e. Did not bother to dig deeper than noticing that it does not boot.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> I've already gone to all the trouble to update u-boot with the Collabora code and all, so going back to a vendor kernel would be annoying
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> hahahaha, I _almost_ pulled the trigger on some of those on AliExpress the other day but I'm glad I didn't
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Well the choice is yours 😄
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> I ordered one via the company I work for plus the PoE hat. Works okay but only vendor and legacy are supported atm.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> I only need the GPIOs anyways
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> From design POV it has quite some disavantages compared to the advantage of its size + full size 40 pin GPIO row
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> When the PoE hat is attached the GPIO get useless since they are not passed through. Also they (ab)use the bolts and nuts securing the hat on the board to pass voltage and ground through
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> At least they provided bolts with pre-installed shrink wrap. Still useless since this means you cannot mount it with some conductive material (like metal screws lol) somewhere....
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> >40°C idle w/o cooling isnt ideal either
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> This kernel is not recommended for rk3588, this is for rk33xx and rk356x.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> well, at the moment, it doesn't seem like there's any non-vendor kernel that works properly on the rk3588
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> I'm using linux-image-edge-rockchip-rk3588
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> I don't know why you choose that kernel, that's not recommended.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> well, I didn't know that linux-image-edge-rockchip-rk3588 _existed_ until you told me just now
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> so that's one reason I didn't choose it first
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <c133> but thanks for the hint! I'll try out `linux-image-edge-rockchip-rk3588` and maybe `linux-image-edge-collabora-rockchip-rk3588` and report back
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> There are daily images at github.com/armbian/os, if you download edge image, that will have this kernel preinstalled.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <amazingfate> Egde kernel in armbian's official deb repo maybe out of date, you can download images, or use armbian beta deb repo.
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <aprodigy> interesting. why should this be an issue at all ?
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Kind a wasting lots of energy while doing nothing
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <Werner> Old h3 SoC barely exceeded room temp when idle
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <aprodigy> ah, k, ty. my rock5's both run passively cooled (different cases tho) somewhere around 44°c+ while being mostly idle (load average is around 0.07 / 0.06 / 0.01) - at the moment with an ambient temp of around 30°c, they're both somewhere around 47°c. the higher temps, with hardly any load, doesn't seem to have any impacct on the energy consumed, according to my current meter. t <clipped message>
<DC-IRC>
[Discord] <aprodigy> bf, i'm not even sure how higher temps inside the housing could lead to a higher current. am i missing something ?
