I asked my FMT-expert friend about the YM2612 and he thinks the very first systems might actually use a YM2612 and not a 3438 (and mentions that a number of books from BITD say so). It doesn't seem he has one on hand though.

looking at the later edition that's on Sega Retro, it still says YM2612, so it doesn't seem they changed it even after production shifted. At the very least, that's probably pretty decent evidence that early systems did use the 2612.
