cr1901 changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> have a cursed keyboard
<tunixman> The User / System button is a nice addition.
<tunixman> "Here, let me switch to ring 0, brb."
<Foone> that gives me an idea. I have an industrial keyboard with a key-lock on it: I could make it so that when you insert the key and turn it to one position, all the commands are run with sudo
<Foone> like how PoS systems have a manager key
<tunixman> Ooooh does it send a keypress event?
<tunixman> I suppose you could just pull some leads off it and to GPIO pins on something suitable...
<Foone> it doesn't do anything yet, it uses a weird serial format I never have been able to figure out (partially because I got it in a broken state) but I've been meaning to build my own controller for it
<tunixman> Or add it to the parallel port.
<tunixman> hahah nice!
<Foone> it uses serial but at TTL voltage levels and over RJ45 cable. it's very weird
<Foone> and it's expensive and proprietary enough that I can find zero docs
<tunixman> woah, yeah, rj45...
<tunixman> hook it to a neural network and start pressing the keys in order and let it infer the protocol hahaa
<Foone> https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1192706746151604224 I thought this was it but no, this is a different one. I have too many weird projects of strange industrial things I can't find docs for
<NiGHTS> foone sur Twitter : "OK, the ABB keyboard has been cleaned up! It's in much better shape now, and doesn't feel gritty to type on. I still need to superglue some parts together to help it stay in one piece, though.… https://t.co/Ofc6QeAqvu"
<Foone> fun fact: I actually started working on something vaguely like that: I build a lot of keyboard matrix decoders and figuring out their layout is always a pain, so I started work on a "figure it out automatically" project
<Foone> where it detects which pins are columns/rows and then you just press keys in a given order to teach it, and it generates the appropriate code to run it as an arduino sketch
<tunixman> haha nice!
<Foone> I did a proof of concept but it was too fiddly to be really usable so I haven't finished it yet
<tunixman> that's a wild keyboard
<Foone> I think the problem is that without diodes the matrix is too tricky to figure out electrically, because of how it's symmetric
<Foone> if you hold down a key at the intersection of row A and column 1, you can't tell which is which because it works both ways
<tunixman> huh, that company makes infection control keyboards.
<tunixman> That you can disable to clean and that automatically reenable after it gets wet or something.
<Foone> https://twitter.com/Foone/status/1276665968052166656 this is the one with the key-lock!
<NiGHTS> foone sur Twitter : "my thread on POS keyboards inspired me to go grab something out of storage that I've been meaning to hack on... the TI Monster. Normal sized keyboard behind it for scale.… https://t.co/GvzCZrdAo2"
<tunixman> Hahahah automan!
<tunixman> I think wordperfect shows up a lot in these threads...
<tunixman> these keyboards are beautiful in sort of a weird brutalist way.
