I am copying a custom device tree into arch/arm64/boot/dts/ so that it is compiled with the rest of the linux device tree. This works well except when I try to use devtool on my kernel. How can I create the workdir of my image without calling bitbake?
<manuel1985>
Typo... not "create"... "delete".
<manuel1985>
I want to delete it, but from previous attempts I learned not to do that but always to do `bitbake -c clean` instead.

But now I'm in a situation which doesn't give my access to bitbake.

In my codebase I have both PREFERRED_VERSION_pn-<package-name> and PREFERRED_VERSION_<package-name>. The BitBake documentation specifies only the latter. Why does the former also work?
<manuel1985>
I know this is override syntax, but OVERRIDES contains "pn-<package-name>" only when it descended into the recipe, and I'd assume it's already too late to select another recipe then.
<rburton>
have you verified that commenting out the pn form does anything? maybe you're selecting the default anyway :)

I'm trying to build a cmake based package that uses grpc, and it blows up from what looks like an issue with the grpc cmake stuff thinking grpc_cpp_plugin should be in the target sysroot (when it's in native as it's a host tool), any suggestions on how to try to address this in the grpc recipe (or maybe toolchain.cmake)?
<smurray>
the only other grpc user I see right off is sysdig in meta-oe, and its CMake files open code finding various grpc bits instead of using the config module
<rburton>
cmake is a bit 'interesting' when it comes to host/native setup
<rburton>
maybe ask the cmake people how this is meant to work, then fix up grpc and/or the toolchain
coldspark29__ has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<smurray>
rburton: yeah. I think we could maybe override the expected location by setting IMPORTED_something, I'll tinker
<rburton>
this is when i much prefer meson with its native: keyword when looking up dependencies :)
<smurray>
heh, funny you should mention that, there's been some issues reported around that with building thins with the AGL SDK
<smurray>
err, things
<smurray>
another item on my long TODO list
<agherzan>
rburton: meet zyga (and the other way around). Was working on the Oniro components written in go and we had a lot of issues when we initially integrated those into Yocto using go-mod. We would be happy to get involved into brainstorming and solving the current deps situation (keep me in the loop too).
<rburton>
oh don't look at me about go :)
<agherzan>
rburton: I tried to pull more people into the problem :) Joke side, I meant Bruce Ashfield.

khem: I'm not sure I follow, that looks like a fix for building grpc itself. The issue I have is with something using the grpc CMake module not finding grpc_cpp_plugin
<smurray>
khem: i.e. find_package(gRPC CONFIG) fails because it expects grpc_cpp_plugin in recipe-sysroot/usr/bin
<khem>
you might need something similar
kevinrowland has joined #yocto
coldspark29__ has joined #yocto
<smurray>
khem: that's removing the cross-compiling check, it's not clear to me how that's necessarily going to help down in the recipe-sysroot/usr/lib/cmake/gRPCTargets.cmake that gets installed by grpc
<smurray>
khem: just disabling checking for the existence of grpc_cpp_plugin seems potentially fraught with peril
<kevinrowland>
Did the behavior of `devtool update-recipe` change sometime between warrior and hardknott? I think it used to create a patch, then create a bbappend if needed, then add a line to SRC_URI to point to the .patch file. But in hardknott it updates SRCREV and assumes that I've pushed the change upstream. In my case I don't maintain a fork of the
<kevinrowland>
upstream repo so I'd rather have devtool make a .patch
<smurray>
khem: I've got a bunch of other stuff to dig through, but I'll keep it in mind when I get a chance to circle back to this
goliath has quit [Quit: SIGSEGV]
<khem>
kevinrowland: it should be doing something similar unless patch you are looking for is applied in the tree before new SHA
<kevinrowland>
khem: sorry, I don't follow. I ran `devtool modify`, updated the source that was checked out in `${BUILDDIR}/workspace/sources/`, tested, then committed the change to the git repo down in `${BUILDDIR}/workspace/sources/`. Can I now use `devtool` to get that commit formatted as a patch (as in `git format-patch <commit_hash>^!`) and then have that
<kevinrowland>
.patch file _copied_ to my own layer, with SRC_URI updated to point to it (as in `SRC_URI += "file://my-patch.patch "`?
coldspark29__ has quit [Ping timeout: 252 seconds]
<kevinrowland>
Hmm, I think I see it in `poky` source. There's a `mode` argument that I can set to "patch". Let me give it a try
<khem>
yes, did you do devtool finish ?
<kevinrowland>
I'm trying with `devtool update-recipe`
mcon has joined #yocto
<kevinrowland>
All good now, should've looked in `poky` source first :)
<rfs613>
can devtool be used to modify the gcc recipe? It seems to setup the workspace, but there is no .git folder within. So I cannot commit changes, and "devtool finish" complains there are no changes.
