jonmason: rburton: hi there. Have a meta-arm specific question. I like to pin my layers to git tags and I see you had one for yocto-3.4 but there is none for 3.4.1 right now. What's the policy here? How do you deal with dot releases? What am I supposed to do? Just checkout the latest git commit in the honister branch?

there isn't a 3.4.1 because we haven't made a 3.4.1 release yet
<rburton>
we just tag periodically, no strict cycle.
<rburton>
we might tag again shortly though i guess, the new BSPs appear to be stable
<rburton>
qschulz: personally right now i'd either stick with 3.4, or have a look at the branch and see if there's any fixes you actually want (there's a lot of commits, but they're mostly new BSPs) and use a sha

Hi. I am working on a platform that is transitioning from python to python3. As part of the transition, I need both python and python3 installed. I need both python-future and python3-future installed. Unfortunately, both packages try to install /usr/bin/futurize and /usr/bin/pasteurize which causes core-imagae-minimal to fail. Neither of
<Guest11>
these commands are needed by my platform, so I tried to simply remove them in do_install_append() in order to get past this problem. However, I haven't been able to get this to work. Can anyone help me get past this problem?
rzr has left #yocto [Leaving]
<qschulz>
Guest11: first question, which version of Yocto are you using?
<qschulz>
(basically want to check that the override syntax you use is the one supported)

I'm watching the meta-tegra talk, this is the stuff of nightmares
<rburton>
Guest11: basic solution would be to change one of those to rename the binary to futureize2 or futureize3
<Guest11>
qschulz: I'm using 3.1.10.
<Guest11>
rburton: I looked into that, but these are pypi packages. I'm not sure how to change installation in a pypi package.
<qschulz>
rburton: or change the bindir used by the package maybe?
Vonter has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<rburton>
Guest11: do_install append to rename the binary
<rburton>
its in /usr/bin, as otherwise they wouldn't conflict
<qschulz>
Guest11: I guess you have to explain more the "However, I haven't been able to get this to work." bit. What exactly didn't work with removing them?
<Guest11>
rburton: I first tried to just remove them (I don't need them), but I get an installed-vs-shipped error during do_package.
<Guest11>
do_install_append() {
<Guest11>
rm -f ${D}/${bindir}/futurize

<rburton>
what is the actual error you get, as that should have done the right thing

well, typically you use ${D}${bindir} but the extra / won't hurt

<qschulz>
Guest11: you're better off doing a rm -r ${D}${bindir} (no -f so that if it's not empty, uit's not removed)
<rburton>
Guest11: thats overcomplicating things, just do_install_append() { rm -rf ${D}${bindir} } is all you need

<qschulz>
(in addition to rm pasteurize and futurize

rm -d is what I thought rm -r was doing

Guest11: that wouldn't be a good idea if you were to keep that forever since it's possible poython3-future adds new binaries overtime and you wouldn't have them and wouldn't know it's missing
<qschulz>
but since it's for transition period, it's probably just fine :)

hi there -- for qemu, I understand that it's just a machine I must build for. Can qemu boot a complete disk image with boot partition, rootfs partitions etc in order to test OTAs?
<vd>
in other words can quemu boot from a disk boot partition, load barebox (or any bootloader), etc.?
mischief has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<rburton>
yes
<rburton>
in meta-arm we have generic-arm64-qemu, which starts EFI firmware we built
<rburton>
the qemux86-64 machine can boot ovmf, the efi firmware for virtualised systems
<JPEW>
vd: I've also booted qemu-x86 with u-boot before; you use the -bios option there. YMMV for other arches

<rburton>
give it a boot loader and it will boot a disk image

vd: I don't know for certain, but I don't think so. In the ARM world, there are a lot of different ways the bootloader can be loaded; I don't know what qemu supports. In x86, the bootloader replaces the "bios" as I mentioned earlier
<vd>
the best would be to instruct qemu in which partition of the final disk image the bootloader is, and which file it is
<vd>
but in the meantime I think the simpler remains to make it boot just a kernel and a rootfs separately
<JPEW>
vd: You'll have to read the qemu docs to see what it can do

copy that to your beaglebone config if you want then you can just runqemu a beaglebone image

RP: 738 iterations overnight and the openssl rpm packages just fine. However, I still have one more hurdle. The 4.16.1.3 rpm recipe split the package into several pieces. I can't get it to build in Dunfell without commenting out the line RRECOMMENDS_${PN} += "rpm-build rpm-sign rpm-archive". Otherwise I get errors like: "ERROR: Nothing
<camaronut>
RPROVIDES 'rpm-build-native' (but virtual:native:/hd/dunfell-test/sources/poky/meta/recipes-devtools/rpm/rpm_4.16.1.3.bb RDEPENDS on or otherwise requires it)". I'm still investigating. Pointers and hints are always appreciated. :)

they're only read for the machine you're building, obviously

if you build an image for beaglebone-yocto then you can runqemu the images from it

underneath the QB_* variables turn into a .qemuboot file next to the image, which runqemu reads

rburton: pardon my ignorance, but if you build for your physical machine then run qemu(arm) afterwards, when FOO:qemuarm overrides are interpreted?
<rburton>
qemuarm overrides only apply to qemuarm machine
<rburton>
if you add the QB_* variables to your own machine, then you can runqemu your own machine
BCMM has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<vd>
ha ok, two approaches, tweak you machine with QB_* variables or build for qemuarm and add overrides in the distro conf for example.
<rburton>
what in the distro conf?
<vd>
some FOO:qemuarm I presume
<rburton>
not sure what you're trying to do
<rburton>
if you want your machine to run in qemu, then set the QB* variables in your machine config
<rburton>
if qemu can emulate something that is close to your machine, then that's a good solution
<rburton>
much easier than building for both eg qemuarm and beaglebone
<vd>
rburton: that is what I'm doing. I was just trying to understand when you'd use :qemuarm override (i.e. build for MACHINE = "qemuarm") but it doesn't really matter.
<vd>
can runqemu be run from a docker container? It complains about enabling TUN at the moment.
nerdboy has joined #yocto
nerdboy has joined #yocto
<rburton>
sure, assuming the distro inside is setup
<rburton>
stap is easier as docker complicates things
<rburton>
(instead of tun)
<vd>
rburton: do you have a reference on how to setup the distro for this?
<rburton>
you need to use privileged docker containers, iirc
<vd>
ho you mean the host distro
<rburton>
yeah, you need the containers to have more power than usual
<rburton>
which is why userspace networking is easier :)
<rburton>
slirp, not stap, my mistake.
