manawyrm: as away but I spent some time testing helios64 big cpu frequency switching. I tested with all opp at 1.2V seemed fine, then I went to vanilla voltages then upping them until it looked stable.
<abws>
seems quite stable at +75mV for opp but I still get crashes from time to time (I did not test max 1.2V that extensively, might be it still crash, but as the voltage does not change it might be fine if the issue is with changing the output voltage of the syr837 regulator.

I checked another board schematic and it looks like the helios64 use the same components around the syr837 as the rk3399pro use around the tcs4525 (I don't know if they intialy designed the board for the tcs4525 or if they ripped off the design from a board with the tcs4525). I checked the tcs4525 datasheet (as far as I could asit ids behind a chinese paywall).

For one the tcs4525 has an internal pulldown for EN and VSEL, while the syr837 has an external pulldown for both (which is missing on the helios64) in its datasheet "typical application" (and say for EN "Do not leave it floating").

<abws>
For the syr837 the datasheet tells "These pins must be decoupled to ground with at least 22uF ceramic capacitor" but the helios64 uses a 10uF capacitor ... (as on the rk3399pro schematic). The helios64 also has a 10K pull up resistor and a 0.1uF capacitor to ground before the EN pin as the rk3399pro (which use a tcs4225, not a syr837)

Maybe the 10K pull up resistor is fine on the EN pin (it is told "not to let it float" after all, not to pull it up or pull it down)

Maybe I should have asked this first, where shuld I ask about rk3399 board design issue (and possible software workarounds, which I believe would be in the linux kernel, but maybe u-boot dts instead)

manawyrm: might be the most critical issue; What in the design of the helios64 led you to think the designers did not know what they were doing ... and is it moddable (or maybe set the cpu B opp frequency to the same voltage to avoid instability)? or the board is good for trash?

the rock960 has the same design around the syr837 for cpu_b except the inductor out of SW pins. 0.24uH on rock960 and 0.47 on Helios64. Could replacing the inductor on the Helios64 be enough to get a stable regulation or ... could the rock960 also be unstable but not use in enviromnents which stresses the board as much as the helios64 (raid10 on pcie sata are tagged to the cpu_b by armbian scripts on helios64)
