I feel like there's a place in the ecosystem here for a standard device that sits outside the box and is high voltage on one side and low on the other. If that's reliable and commonly recognizable, it would provide a great margin of safety.

Hang the ethernet/microcontroller off of that and the inside of the box is all high voltage.

It's frustrating there aren't too many good standards for that sort of thing for residential. And usually you do not want to be the innovator in high voltage solutions unless you're an electrical engineer.

PoE based lighting is really interesting to me because it removes the high voltage problem entirely, everything is just Ethernet, including for power.

But since PoE lighting is aimed for commercial environments, it's solidly priced out of my ability to play with it.
