<rapha>
now the next level is: how do you know which web server the test runner is starting for its integration tests, and on what port/socket. so far, with netstat and lsof, i've gotten nowhere.

hmm, okay, it seems to pretend there's an example.com where it runs. perhaps that's good enough.

<manveru>
need an oid agent for the actual type encodings, and a connection pool, but in the end it probably won't work much different from pgo
<manveru>
so sorry... this won't be anything like Sequel anytime soon
<adam12>
I couldn't give up my beloved Sequel.
<manveru>
i mostly enjoy writing binary protocol stuff in gleam so far, bitstring pattern matching is just fun
<adam12>
It looks similar to Elixir bitstring pattern matching which I also found quite fun
<leah2>
yep
<adam12>
Parsing MP3 tags and such.
<manveru>
yeah, same as erlang one
<manveru>
coincidence? i think not!
<adam12>
LOL
<manveru>
anyway, what's new in ruby land?
<adam12>
manveru: My favourites lately have been new debug gem, YJIT, and pattern matching.
<adam12>
Maybe more.
<manveru>
are there still three competing type system implementations?
<adam12>
Definitely 2 mainstream with 1 experimental.
<adam12>
I haven't found joy in any of them...
<adam12>
I think rbs/steep might get there eventually. There's a RubyKaigi talk scheduled about inlining the types in the Ruby code, which might be interesting.
<adam12>
My non-favourite pieces have been rdoc/docs in general and the overall focus on Rails :\

Oh. Async / Fiber scheduler have bene awesome too.
<adam12>
I'm only really starting to scratch the surface with Async/Fiber but I've built 3 projects on it now where historically I might have used Go/Elixir.
<adam12>
Reminds me of Ryan's project inlineruby or whatever.
<adam12>
Where you can just embed C.
<manveru>
yeah
<manveru>
but it definitely beats writing C :)
<adam12>
100%
<adam12>
I haven't had any performance issues on projects as of late, so I haven't really needed to look anywhere else.
<manveru>
i don't quite like that it does JSON serialization for composite types... but that's something fixable
<adam12>
Is that what it does? Interesting...
<adam12>
Seems path of least resistance vs using something like MessagePack / Cap Proto / Whatever.
<manveru>
yeah, since they both have JSON in stdlib
<manveru>
i just thought it may be fun to basically make a server that way, where you only have the actual application code in ruby, and the framework sits on the crystal side...
<manveru>
would basically eliminate compile times while still giving you good performance
<adam12>
An interesting approach. I was musing with havenwood about something similar. I want a compiled shell but a lot of application code written in Ruby.
<adam12>
Kind of like neovim+lua extensions.
<manveru>
heh
<adam12>
But let me ship a single binary or a few files to a remote host.
<adam12>
mruby doesn't get me there, and linking to ruby seems problematic lately.
<manveru>
well, mruby would be the other option, if you can live without most gems
<adam12>
I found a fun ruby bug ticket about adding support to Ruby for ruby-like archives which seemed interesting. I've experimented with my own single-file Ruby archive last night.
<manveru>
my son did a bunch of games with dragonruby, which basically combines gtk and mruby into a game engine... it was quite slow and had strange behavior compared to ruby
<adam12>
manveru: Really? I heard such great things about dragonruby perf.
pascal_blaze has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]

I always wanted to try it but I'm already short on time as it is.
<manveru>
dunno, we switched to the lobster language later and it was way faster
<adam12>
Hmm
<manveru>
anyway, will check out that fiber stuff, looks interesting :)
<adam12>
Definitely.
