running a ruby script to collect some data in a nice formatted way and then passing them to my C (/ Rust) library, i am not really a Ruby programmer and i thought that having some variables referencable with @ syntax at the top level of the script would help avoid variable name collisions

You can usually learn quite a lot by dropping a binding.{irb,pry} in the context of the failure. The 'ls' command can show your surrounding state like methods, variables, etc.
