<felixdv> Hello, I've only used GNOME on Linux, so far, and I've tried installing river, but when I connect into it, I only have an empty screen with no way to interact with anything. The doc doen't explain how to get started either
<novakane> felixdv: have a look at the example config and be sure to have a config installed in the right place
<felixdv> Why isn't such a config installed along river?
<felixdv> It's a bit surprising for a newcomer to see nothing
<waleee> a lot of people prefer the distributions package manager to not mess with your home directory

<waleee> the middle way would possibly be to create a config at first start in some sort of guided configuration that queries you for eg the terminal to use etc
<waleee> felixdv: ... but for about 100% of x11 window managers/wayland compositors that isn't desktop environments, the tradition is that the user has to do some reading up regarding usage and configuration
<felixdv> Oh, OK, that makes sense. I'll download the config and see if I can do something with it.
<novakane> felixdv: also I don't know if you installed from distro package or build from the lastest master but be sure to look at the example of the version you have
<novakane> i.e don't use the config from master if you have installed river 0.2.4
<felixdv> I have the 0.2.1 from the Fedora repos. Maybe I should build from master. It's written in zig, right? It shouldn't be hard to build.
<felixdv> At least easier than a C or C++ one. I never could build a single open-source project in these languages, despite following the doc to the letter
<novakane> oh yeah 0.2.1 is really outdated if you can build it from master it would be better
<felixdv> Thanks for the help, I'll bother you again if I cannot have something working :P

<Endermen1094> problem while compiling river i get this error https://bpa.st/5K6A
<Endermen1094> i am on gentoo amd64 using zig-bin instead of the zig package that it reccemends as i don't have the time to compile it natively
<novakane> Endermen1094: river 0.2.4 needs zig 0.10
<Endermen1094> mv lig version is 0.11.0
<Endermen1094> &zig
<Endermen1094> **zig version
<novakane> yes you can't use zig 0.11 with river 0.2.4
felixdv has quit [Quit: felixdv]
<novakane> either use zig 0.10 or use the master branch of river

<Cornelius-Figgle> not sure where to ask this question, but I will go with here
<Cornelius-Figgle> I am playing Spotify via the Brave browser (Chromium-based) and wish to bind keys to control this playback
<Cornelius-Figgle> however playerctl doesn't seem to find the player
<Cornelius-Figgle> am I missing a variable or something?
<Cornelius-Figgle> Launching river with just "river" in the TTY and Brave via its binary
<Cornelius-Figgle> no other variables have been set by me
<Cornelius-Figgle> do I need to change how I am launching either river or Brave?
