<Chris__> anyone know anything about using JTAG on a Marvell 88PA6170? I have been trying to get a working config for a few days now. Ive been able to get a connection opened but it refuses to listen to any command I send.

<olerem> Chris__: Hi! some SoCs may have different kinds of protection on additional configuration.

<Chris__> olerem: i know they do, but theres not much I can find on this cpu or board. its for a Lexmark MX910de, and I am having firmware issues and kernel panics. was hoping that jtag would be a solutipn to this problem. the only other option I can think of is remove the chip containing the firnware, but it looks to be an skhynix flash mpdule, and i dont want to deal with a bga device rn.
<olerem> Chris__: oi... sounds like deep dive :) Do this printer worth it? or it is just for fun?
<olerem> Chris__: it can be a solution if chip datasheet is available and JTAG parts are doucumented
<Chris__> its not reeeeaaallly worth it. just a work side project that i took home. its not documented at all. we have multiple of these printers with this error at work and i would like to try and save whatever company sent them in a few 10s of thousands of dollars. would look good to my job as well. that is why ive just been poking around at it for a few days, no one else in the company has figured out the issue and just trashed otherwise
<Chris__> working printers. someone in my discord group suggested it could just be a memory issue, and try replacing the ram cache for this soc. but man is this confusing. the board itself has 3 SoCs, 1 is the marvell one i said above, then 2 are rebranded toshiba ones. i forget the exact make.
<Chris__> but realistically, im not expecting to pass or fail
<Chris__> but for now i need to clock in, ive taken the trouble board home so i cant work on it for ablout 14ish hrs. ill test more random things and check in here later today
<olerem> Chris__: is it linux based system?
<olerem> can you login in to it over uart?
<Chris__> i believe it is linux based, as i took the hdd out and plugged it into my server to try and read the contents and it was a linux partition. and i have not tried uart, dont even know what that is.
<Chris__> i can look more into that when i get home

<Chris__> olerem: so looking into uart, I would need to map the serial connections of the mainboard or of the main SoC? I understand the software bits of it and that the RPi has UART pins already that I can connect to and use. Sorry if im asking a lot, this deep of a hardware level is new to me.
<Chris__> (i totally didnt just realize that im dumb, if there is a serial port, its connected to the SoC, so yes, i find the serial connection)
<Chris__> went to Marvells site to look up some more info on the SoC, they wont tell anyone anything unless they have an NDA.. fun
