<PaulFertser> Rudde: hi
crabbedhaloablut has joined #openocd
<Rudde> I'm not completely sure if this is the right place, but I'm interested in trying to dump the firmware of embedded devices like modems and TV'es too see what is going on in them and I've read everywhere that I can do that with a JTAG pins
<Rudde> so I tried to find a USB to JTAG adapter just to figure out they're all for spesific devices
<Rudde> do I need speseific USB to JTAG converter for every single device I just want to see if I can succesfully dump anything from?
<PaulFertser> Rudde: no, the adapter needs to be supported by the software you need for dumping.
<Rudde> So I need different software for each thing I want to dump and that software might require different hardware too?
<PaulFertser> Rudde: I'm sure there's some hardware which require odd proprietary tools
<Rudde> so JTAG in itself isn't a standard?
<PaulFertser> Rudde: and in any case if you're in the topic of dumping I think it's better to invest in boards that would allow you dumping from raw NAND and eMMC.
<PaulFertser> Rudde: JTAG is a standard for boundary scan. Everything else is up to the vendors.
<bencoh> well, at least the jtag interface in itself is pretty standard; and most architectures define a Debug standard of their own on top of it
<bencoh> it could be worse :)
