<pi0>
i did! i read an article that it was a hostile take over
<ttmrichter>
pi0: Also, if you find out any better alternative to the hackRF, let me know.
<pi0>
from a korean tech billinaire
<ttmrichter>
I've got a hackRF in my shopping cart.
<ttmrichter>
No, from the "Crown Prince of Korea". :D
<pi0>
oh wow, i did not even know they had royality
<ttmrichter>
His Royal Highness (emphasis on "high") Andrew Lee, the Clown Prince of Korea.
<ttmrichter>
They don't.
<ttmrichter>
The old royal family keeps up pretenses.
<pi0>
oh wow
<pi0>
the hackrf is out of my price range
<ttmrichter>
Yeah. It's why I haven't got one yet and am looking for newer and cheaper (ideally mixed) alternatives.
<pi0>
my fav store is aliexpress now, but i better order now so it will arrive before christmas
<pi0>
that store is amazing
<ttmrichter>
Yes. Taobao Lite is pretty amazing if you're not in China. :D
<ttmrichter>
So, if you want the full Crown Prince story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Yi has the tawdry details. (Search on Andrew Lee and then read starting a few paragraphs back).
<ttmrichter>
Basically a bunch of very pathetic people trying to pretend that the empire of Korea still exists.
<pi0>
one day i plan on visiting china, see the great wall! visit shenzhen were all the good stuff is designed and made
<pi0>
oh boy too much drama in the world lol
<pi0>
how are the cases in your area? are masks still mandated?
<pi0>
things are slowly opening up, which is cool

pi0: Haven't had a case in the city since June of last year.
<ttmrichter>
Masks are still mandated for public transit and in places like shopping malls.
<ttmrichter>
Even where not mandated, though, I'd say about 75% of people still wear them.

Honestly this whole thing opened my eyes to something I would never have believed beforehand. During the Great Lockdown I was trying to come up with ways to get my family and I to Canada where I thought it would be safer. I'm glad I couldn't come up with anything...
<pi0>
oh wow canada
<ttmrichter>
pi0: Despite the smugness of Canadians when they look at the raw numbers and talk about how badly the USA did compared to Canada ... Canada didn't do too great.
<ttmrichter>
Better than the USA? Sure. But that's clearing a 2.5cm hurdle, that is.
<ttmrichter>
Better than the UK? That's clearing a 1.5cm hurdle.
<ttmrichter>
Try something challenging like beating Australia. Or practically any east Asian nation.
<olerem>

pi0, ttmrichter: If you're looking for better/cheaper alternatives to the hackRF, you'll have to define which parameters you care about, since right now there isn't really a "best" SDR that's good at everything. e.g., frequency range, max bandwidth, MIMO, etc.
<cyrozap>
For instance, the LimeSDR can sample at 61.44 MSps, and its analog bandwidth is even larger, and it can also do 2x2 MIMO, but it can only tune from 100 kHz to 3.8 GHz, and costs $315. The bladeRF 2.0 micro can do 47 MHz to 6 GHz, but its analog bandwidth is limited to 56 MHz, and it costs $480. The LimeSDR Mini is $200, but only does SISO, has only 30.72 MHz of bandwidth, and can only tune from 10 MHz to
<cyrozap>
3.5 GHz. And the hackRF, while inexpensive in comparison, only has an 8-bit sample depth (all the others have 12-bit), 20 MHz of bandwidth, and is limited by its USB 2.0 interface (the others have USB 3.0). But, it can tune from 1 MHz to 6 GHz.
<cyrozap>
Oh, and for completeness, the ADALM Pluto/PlutoSDR can tune from 325 MHz to 3.8 GHz (though in theory it can be "unlocked" to support 47 MHz to 6 GHz, but that's running the chip out-of-spec), has ~12 MHz bandwidth (due to USB 2.0 limitations), only has SISO, and costs $150.
