<high-rez> chewitt: Do you know if there's any roadmap for hardware video decode etc? I thought being mali it was straight forward but I guess not. I'm so lost on the android vidoe hardware front :)

<chewitt> high-rez GPU (Mali) and VPU/VDEC (video hardware decode) are different things
<chewitt> GPU is acceleration for GUIs, which is no issue (good support)
<chewitt> VDEC is the problem area
<chewitt> work started, then stalled, and hasn't really restarted
<chewitt> H264 and VP9 are upstream but need work on the userspace side (ffmpeg/gstreamer) and getting userspace right prob. requires some driver tweaking
<chewitt> HEVC is working but rough on older HW and needs proper work on newer devices
<chewitt> Amlogic's non-professional user community prefers to fiddle around the edges of the vendor kernel which is ugly code but mostly feature complete and easier to get a result from
<chewitt> the professional developers are mostly focussed on industrial use-cases which either don't need media support, or do and thus need the vendor kernel, but in either case they expect to be paid for their services
<chewitt> so there's a lack of skilled talent wiling to tackle some complex tasks pro-bono
