<Guest8447> hey guys, I'm use kodi on coreelec, and since they want to use the some old ass hacked kernel, I found decided to try meson, but your nonupdated documentation said video support is integrated into libreelec branch, except they dropped amlogic support, so what's the deal? Is this just for hobbyists or is it functional in those distros, I'm willing
<Guest8447> to compile myself if I have to.
<Guest8447> I guess my bad english is asking is this easy way to drop kernel into uboot type distro?

<orkid> my experience is that if you want accelerated video decode, then use what coreelec provides (vendor kernel).
<orkid> maybe i'm wrong, but i think it might not be so easy to use the mainline (5.x now) kernel with coreelec.
<orkid> it is possible, and is obviously done, with other, more 'normal', distros
<orkid> mainline video decode isn't bug free. from my experience, coreelec video decode is bug free.

<chewitt> CE is heavily adapted to the BSP kernel
<chewitt> LE is tracking the upstream kernel, see https://github.com/chewitt/LibreELEC.tv/commits/amlogic
<chewitt> I've suspended nightlies for now as development on the upstream vdec has been stalled for a while
<ndufresne> oh, a bit unfortunate ...
<chewitt> It needs a rather specific skillset .. the gene pool of talent is rather small *and* mostly professional developers who need paying :)
<chewitt> In other SoCs (RK, Allwinner) the userbase has no real option but to contribute to the upstream code so there's great progress
<chewitt> In the Amlogic world people are content to fiddle around the edges of the BSP codebase

<ndufresne> "professional developers who need paying", haha, I guess that applies to me a little, though I try my best to help on the spare time ;-D
