Have you checked if the hardware itself offers options? Often in bios or via fn keys you can turn down one signal completely.

I think EDID can go through VGA, at least for some older monitors. Not so much from a CRT with RCA-out, haha

chewitt: It would be a good idea. Searching for the issue I saw a handful of forum threads from people who were more or less looking for the same thing. Some had fixed it fiddling with xrandr which of course doesn't work anymore...
