I've been running a bare board (no case, no fan) for a few months without any issues

It's in a closed space (AV cabinet fronted with speaker mesh) within an air-conditioned room (AC set to 24ºC)

board temps reach up to 75ºC when it's been software decoding 4K stuff for ages

but the boards are designed to run that hot .. thermal throttling will kick in at some point (although I've never seen it afaik)

as I don't manually handle the board (it in the cabinet) .. occasionally being a little warm (sat on the anti-static bag it came in) isn't a problem

once flirc ship case samples out i'll be using one of those again

if you plan to run a desktop distro and do other things with an RPi5 board then I'd think about using the official case with heatsink/fan kit for a while

but for LE use which is generally a lighter load, it's "nice to have" not "must have"

[slack] <chewitt> the one gripe I’ve had is that the soft plastic on the top of the RPi3/4 cases I have has gone a little icky over time, but speaking to their devs it’s a known things that should be addressed in the RPi5 case.
