<cyberpear> any hope of a high-end high-memory RISC-V system to act as a VM host? (or does it exist?)
<davidlt[m]> There are companies working on datacenter class RISC-V SOCs
<davidlt[m]> H [hypervisor] extension should be ratified by the end of the year (December)
<davidlt[m]> Profiles and Platforms specifications are still WIP, so that probably blocks some systems from getting "compliant" sticker
<davidlt[m]> Also tons of new extensions are about to be ratified
<davidlt[m]> That incl. 64K page support, bitmanip extension, vectors, 57-bit VA, crypto, etc.
<davidlt[m]> Even the new servers/SBCs/whatever built in the next few years compliant with the initial Profiles and Platforms specifications will be just initial "proper" platforms
<cyberpear> sounds exciting!
<davidlt[m]> Yeah, it's is!
<davidlt[m]> It's 10 years in a making already, but tons of new stuff is coming in parallel
<cyberpear> 🎉
<davidlt[m]> Here is a list for the last couple of months
<davidlt[m]> Public review for standard extension Sstc... (full message at https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/libera.chat/0df104ff1db051da5f23dc04c3acaa79e9dd73da)
<davidlt[m]> Profiles and Platforms specifications should be updated every two years
<davidlt[m]> The 1st one will be 2022, so anything before that can be incl.
<davidlt[m]> Btw, there is also a working group for HPC
<davidlt[m]> E.g. they are looking at beyond 57-bit VA

<cyberpear> some of that is beyond me, but I'm interested in eventually making a powerful RISC-V homelab. Eventually push it at work, too, when it's ready.

<pierce> Not that anyone asked, but I'm personally very keen on a high performance RISC-V desktop that can replace my i7 workstation
