r0ni: I figured it out, I just needed to use a specific set of arguments for the gtkgreet command in the config.toml, in this case command = "env XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp cage -s -- gtkgreet" worked (after I built and installed cage)
<hunter0one>
I was originally attempting it with labwc which probably works too, but I think the PCLOS users will appreciate cage more since its just for the display manager

<r0ni>
ahh yeah... fyi its better to use 'greetd.conf' file as config.toml can get overwritten, it will check greetd.conf first then config.toml IIRC

<r0ni>
I downgraded all the qt6 to 6.8.3 just to build plasma-workspace and it still fails :( booooo lol
<cruxbridge>
<tim> r0ni: I had to rebuild essentially all of kde to get a working session after the latest bump. Didn't really see that one coming. But fwiw it works for me
<cruxbridge>
<tim> after the whole rebuilding stuff ;D I wasn't able to pinpoint what exactly was unhappy with the qt6 bump
<r0ni>
usually its layer-shell-qt but i rebuilt that and am testing now
<r0ni>
HA! it worked
<r0ni>
layer-shell-qt ftw
<r0ni>
(note for future reference ;)
<cruxbridge>
<tim> jaeger: ^ :D
<r0ni>
I guess i should test kde first before making claims
<cruxbridge>
<tim> I thought you did that already
<r0ni>
well the package built heh
<cruxbridge>
<tim> oh, well, ok. I saw kwin complaining that it was missing the set of qt libs it was compiled against, but rebuilding kwin wasn't helping. But since I needed this install working immediately I sideloaded my older qt packages to get on with my day
<cruxbridge>
<tim> i left it overnight rebuilding qt6 and kde and it worked
<r0ni>
x11 working, wayland failing
<r0ni>
but that could be my start script... it used to work
<r0ni>
this vm is mostly a science experiment at this point
<cruxbridge>
<tim> heh
<cruxbridge>
<tim> I have to admit I didn't even bother to try x11
<jaeger>
I rebuilt layer-shell-qt as one of my tests and it didn't fix things
<jaeger>
I think what I might start doing is each time a qt update happens, build a set of plasma packages in docker and keep them around
<r0ni>
yeah it's usually been the culprit in the past, but this 6.9 must be a big one
<hunter0one>
very cool to see KDE6 in CRUX btw
<hunter0one>
r0ni: Im probably about to switch to using <greeter>.toml's, like opensuse seems to be doing, so that we can have a choice of greeter set by environment variables
<hunter0one>
like to use gtkgreet it will be set in /etc/sysconfig/greetd as something like GREETER=gtkgreet and seen by the init script for greetd to run greetd -c /etc/greetd/$GREETER.toml
<r0ni>
greetd allows you to do almost anything whihc makes it nice, i have it setup for it to use nwg-hello on slackware which basically loads sway or hyprland to make a greeter and login
<hunter0one>
Ive built cage to use for regreet and gtkgreet, i havent built regreet yet but I may go with that since PCLOS is beginner-friendly and that seems to have a session menu, I dont mind gtkgreet at all but the rest of the user base may not know the right session command to run
<hunter0one>
Basically we recently set up kde wayland in PCLOS but because SDDM does something to make the wayland session act like a shell it crashes when people copy to clipboard with Ctrl + C and a lot of people have complained about it, so we may just ditch sddm for greetd altogether lol
<r0ni>
well even kde is about to ditch sddm so a wise choice ;)
<hunter0one>
I wonder what they'll have instead
<r0ni>
seems they are going to make something new based on the old kdm
<r0ni>
at least from what i've read that seems to be the way they are going
<hunter0one>
nice
<hunter0one>
ill be back, logging out to test the script :P
