vd: iirc it looks for an MLO (without configuration header iirc) at specific offsets... but u-boot will no doubt also have opinions about that, regarding where/how to find the u-boot.img. I don't know if it uses a fixed layout compiled into u-boot or if the spi flash needs to have some kind of partition map

I guess in theory it might be possible to use spi flash as rootfs using mtd, if you really don't care about performance at all? I don't really know much about it
