cr1901 changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, CD/floppy disk theory of operation, and the 68k CPU are also on-topic. <Lord_Nightmare>
from back in the day when you'd run hot and neutral between different joists to prevent them from shorting together, using ceramic 'knobs' to hold the wires in place, which were usually coated in some sort of extremely primitive substance, possibly tar or some very early rubber
<Lord_Nightmare>
or maybe just paint
<Lord_Nightmare>
i don't know
<Lord_Nightmare>
the 'tubes' were little hollow ceramic tubes to allow the wires to turn 90 degrees when going from under a floor to inside a wall, and the wire would be threaded through it
<Lord_Nightmare>
it was in wide use until the mid-late 1920s, by 1935 everyone was using armored cable instead, which had its own issues
<Lord_Nightmare>
armored cable is two wires, usually coated with rubber/cloth, inside a spiral 'armored' shield, which also acts as a (crude) ground assuming it isn't cut anywhere
<Lord_Nightmare>
its no longer up to code to use an armored cable without a 3rd, specifically ground, wire inside it
<Lord_Nightmare>
but if you do use a 3-wire armored cable, that's still allowed by electrical code afaik
<Lord_Nightmare>
most wiring nowadays is done with plastic romex style cables
<qu1j0t3>
Lord_Nightmare: I think some of those cables had woven fabric insulation
<qu1j0t3>
ah you mentioned that
<Lord_Nightmare>
ironically it was an armored cable, soaked completely through with water and rusted, which had the two conductors inside arc and weld together in my parents place and ALMOST caused a big fire, but the wall was so wet from the water leak that rusted the cable apart that it self-extinguished
<Lord_Nightmare>
that entire circuit has been completely redone with new wiring now
<Lord_Nightmare>
my parents place was built in 1920 and all the original wiring was knob+tube, and some of it is still left
<Lord_Nightmare>
the basement was redone at some point in probably the 1930s or 1940s (probably when switching from coal to oil heat), and that's when the armored cable down there was installed, which failed about 10 years ago
<Lord_Nightmare>
the knob and tube wiring, as dangerous as everyone says it is, hasn't caused any electrical issues
<Lord_Nightmare>
ironically it was the LATER wiring which did!
