specifically, on this board https://in-circuit.de/shop/icnova-sam9g45-oem/ there is a NAND, a NOR and some SRAM installed. it is the one i am using. at91bootstrap is on the NOR flash, u-boot itself lies in NAND, as does the kernel uImage. the age-old u-boot i'm using is version 2009-11. kernel version is 4.8.6. bootargs are `dtb=20000000 console=ttyS0,115200n8 earlyprink=dbgp,keep mem=128M`, bootcmd is `nand read 0x70400000 nand0,0;

bootm` which was totally able to boot a kernel with version 2.6.something but is now unable to boot the newer one. i checked the addresses, the uImage is at 0x70400000, which is a bit after the start of nand0. the device tree binary was compiled into the uImage, 0x20000000 is the offset from the start of the uImage. is there something terribly ary here?
