<tlwoerner> qschulz: don't worry, i wouldn't try something that silly
norton has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<tlwoerner> if my grepping is quasi accurate i count about 80 rockchip _defconfigs in upstream u-boot
<tlwoerner> 50 of which have "_ENV_IS_IN_" defined
<tlwoerner> of which 47 of those place the ENV in mmc, at the Rockchip-specified u-boot environment partition offset
<tlwoerner> (which is exactly what i was hoping for)
<qschulz> guess which ones aren't :D
<tlwoerner> coincidentally the one that i was working with, the rock-pi-s, doesn't have it defined
<tlwoerner> so i'm going to change that, then look at the rest of the boards i know about to see what they were up to, but now i see that pretty much all of them have this already done
<qschulz> (puma-rk3399 and ringneck-px30 use a different offset for the env in eMMC)
<tlwoerner> lol, i.e. "yours"?
<qschulz> yes
<tlwoerner> ouch. i'm working on a patch to include the u-boot env in the wks file so it's accessible as a partition
<qschulz> jaguar-rk3588 and tiger-rk3588 will use Rockchip's default instead
<qschulz> tlwoerner: we use a different wks for those boards, so don't worry
<tlwoerner> great
<Tartarus> jceel: Peng Fan
<zear> Tartarus, I've already pinged Peng about that patchset a week ago, with no response
<zear> would be nice if someone else could take over review of this series
Dr_Who has joined #u-boot
<apalos> Let me know if you need any more info on what I responded, but I've rewritten the linker script, it will take me some time to clean/test it, but I'd rather do that
<marex> apalos: see V1 and discussion with sjg1
<apalos> That overlay patch seems like a hack
<marex> apalos: the overlay change is just the same thing what armv7a does to avoid massive binaries due to e.g. command line history buffer
<apalos> and removing the .bss segment reduced the size? how big can a bss be
<apalos> on top of that this segment isnt loaded to begin with
<apalos> Can you find the v1 link, looking for the title in lore had 0 results

<apalos> marex: no worries. Keep in mind that .lds script with the section I pasted needs more changes
<apalos> Because the start.S code expects those to be defined as c variables in sections.c
<apalos> but my patch just removes those sections
<apalos> marex: I dont think sjg1 has uinderstood what the linker script does
qqq has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<apalos> Those bss_start/end arent segments and they should be 8 bytes each
<apalos> Basically we define them as sections and add a single variable in there to force the linker to emit relative references
<apalos> But IIRC you can force the linker to do that, by defining the symbols within the section, instead of the linker script body
<apalos> sjg1: the *.bss* segment which is the ''''big''' one is marked as noload
<apalos> the only thing we are loading is 2 chars for define the *lenght* of the bss
<apalos> marex: on top of that, with your patch applied, does the .bss report an 'ALLOC' attribute
<apalos> ?
<apalos> Because, yes you dont have to load it, you just have to memset it to 0
<apalos> But in the running binary you require actual backing ram for that segment.

<apalos> sjg1: marex fwiw that patch I attached is a bit bogus :>
<apalos> I've managed to create more bugs than lines of code, but the general idea is still the same
la_mettrie has left #u-boot [WeeChat 3.8]
<apalos> You need to remove the . before the redefinition of bss_start/end
<apalos> But if we do that and cleanup sections.c we dont need that linker hack

<zear> <Tartarus> zear: Well, is the dts file a clean sync from some recent upstream kernel release?
<zear> I believe the dts files are based off of fsl-ls10*-rdb.dts as found in u-boot repository
<zear> but I don't know how long ago they were split from them
