<tlwoerner> marex: last week you said that there were better choices than using a dos partition for the environment storage
<tlwoerner> was that only because of the patent thing, or do you have a preferred format?
<tlwoerner> is it better to access a u-boot environment via a filesystem, or through, say, raw mmc?
<Tartarus> It Depends(tm), and for env in fs, we do support ext as well
<Tartarus> Whenever you hard code locations, ie raw anything, you need to think very hard about potential future size growths
<tlwoerner> rockchip specifies a required partition layout, which already includes a chunk for the u-boot environment
<tlwoerner> but i don't think any of the rockchip _defconfigs make use of it
<tlwoerner> i was planning on changing that :-)
<tlwoerner> so from a "i need to access this both from u-boot and linux user-space" point of view, i was wondering if i should put a filesystem in there (or any sort) or just use raw mmc access?
<Tartarus> Ah, are you talking with Kever in one of the threads I know is going on about assorted things, but I don't recall all the details of right now?
<Tartarus> And from a userspace POV, the tools handle wherever just fine

<tlwoerner> i wasn't aware Kever had anything going on in this area, i'll go check the mailing list
<tlwoerner> coincidental timing, perhaps
<tlwoerner> and good to know there's no ad-/dis-advantage to one over the other wrt user-space tools

<Tartarus> Well, qschulz is also involved iirc
<Tartarus> Or maybe it's just only related in my mind

<Forty-Bot> personally, I like to stick my envs in fs since it's very flexible
<Forty-Bot> no size limits on U-Boot, no running out of partitions
<Forty-Bot> very obvious when there is an env present of absent
<Forty-Bot> *or absent
