<azonenberg>
look at the control panel to the right of the display carefully, lol
<azonenberg>
it looks like the removable button module got misplaced and the guy is holding a TV remote up there to make it look complete
<azonenberg>
(this is mentioned in the footnotes but it still feels a bit scummy to me)
<GenTooMan>
Ok it's hilarious because it clearly reads "SONY". "Front panel keypad is not installed" does that mean it's missing or got yanked out by some crazed person... It is sort of weirdly funny to look at.
<d1b2>
<Darius> lol wow
<d1b2>
<Darius> scamlicious
<azonenberg>
The keypad is removable
<azonenberg>
it connects via a little spring contact when mounted in the scope
<azonenberg>
but can also be removed and attached via a mini USB cable
<azonenberg>
its just a usb hid device i think
<d1b2>
<Darius> I definitely want to pay the price of a new car to someone like that
<azonenberg>
apparently this one got misplaced or damaged
<azonenberg>
yeah lol, no way am i buying from them
<azonenberg>
Just noticed it on my usual scan of ebay to see what the high end scope market looks like
<azonenberg>
I have a SDA 8Zi (pre -A) which has the same keypad style
<azonenberg>
you probably could get a replacement, it likely fits the same keypads as the current -B model, but who knows if thats the only thing wrong with the scope :P
<d1b2>
<Darius> yeah
<d1b2>
<Darius> that's a lot of money to spend on ebay
<azonenberg>
Yeah I dropped $33K on my SDA 816Zi after originally seeing the scope on ebay but ended up buying direct from the seller because we worked out an installment payment deal
<azonenberg>
But i spent quite a while researching things and also he sent it back to lecroy to get a tuneup (at his expense) after noticing some issues with it during his pre-sale testing
<azonenberg>
so it basically got a full factory refurb and i was confident it was gonna be in good shape
<azonenberg>
My only complaint so far has been that the touchscreen calibration tends to drift
<azonenberg>
every couple of times i use it i need to re-cal the touchscreen
<azonenberg>
Not sure why that is but the actual electrical performance has been fine and thats what i mostly care about, i mostly use it via glscopeclient anyway
<d1b2>
<Darius> nice
GenTooMan has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<azonenberg>
Also next year i'm sending it back to lecroy for a major revamp
<azonenberg>
Gonna get turned into the 8ZI-B which adds 2x 80 Gsps interleaving capability (right now it's 4x 40 Gsps but can't interleave), a faster CPU, and will address any other issues i have at that time
GenTooMan has joined #scopehal
<GenTooMan>
azonenberg, depending on the touch screen technology mostly, resistive touch screens tend to drift out of calibration.
<monochroma>
temperature sensitive
someone-else has joined #scopehal
<azonenberg>
GenTooMan: yes it is probably resistive. it's from 2009
<azonenberg>
i think the newer gen ones are capacitive, i may have them swap the panel when i sent it in for the upgrade next year
<azonenberg>
monochroma: no, the scope is on 24/7 and the lab is climate controlled +/- a degree or two
<azonenberg>
should be very thermally stable
<GenTooMan>
hopefully that's possible since capacitive use a different controller type etc.
<azonenberg>
i think the interface to the PC is usb or something
<azonenberg>
not sure physically where the controller is
<azonenberg>
but they use a reasonably-standard-looking PC motherboard internally
<azonenberg>
so i imagine it's off that board and probably not on the analog board either
<GenTooMan>
likely they are emulating a mouse with it, so it's possible. Capacitive is more expensive but just plain better, it also doesn't feel as strange to touch.
<azonenberg>
well what i know for sure is they are using industrial grade panels with somewhat dated tech
<azonenberg>
e.g. even the new latest and greatest are only 720p resolution
<GenTooMan>
heh could be a lot worse could be 800x480 display :D
<GenTooMan>
7" diagonal.
<azonenberg>
Yeah this is a 15" panel but only 720p resolution. So on par with the laptop i had my first few years of college when 1080p screens were just coming out
