<Ursium_> Hi! I am writing a blog post on the decentralized/open web and id like to know a tiny bit more about the status of sandstorm... without the hyper-capiltalistic angle of a token, blockchain style, how does the protocol intend to fund itself long term?
<ocdtrekkie> Sandstorm is less of a protocol and more of a platform. It's a piece of software you can run software on. While there's a few centralized services on offer (Sandcats, the App Market), there's not a lot of costs we have to bear based on people operating their own Sandstorm servers.
<ocdtrekkie> We raised a bit of funding through FundOSS and started using it to pay for some development work that furthers what the community would like to get done, and I'd like to try to do some more of that sort of thing in the future.
<ocdtrekkie> I think in the ideal case, if more people/organizations find the value in the project, more people/organizations will contribute to developing it further.
<isd> By "less of a protocol" we jake means "not a protocol at all" :P
<isd> Yeah, it's a piece of software that users run themselves, so operational costs are minimal. Development is mostly volunteer, but we are hoping to do more fundraising in the future -- we miss the pace of development when sandstorm was a business with VC funding.
<isd> Ursium_: when you publish the post, drop us a link. I'd love to see what you end up writing about us.
<Ursium_> Thanks, will do - good think you replied, because - i thought you had gone offline. So glad to hear you're still going. Out of curiosity how much was the fundoss ? I'm trying to draw a parallel between project like yours and blockchain projects - 2 approaches to decentralization, but manyverse got
<Ursium_> se 15m from unscrupulous 'vcs'.
<Ursium_> 500 dollars last year, while scam nft regularly rai
<isd> Around $5k
<ocdtrekkie> It's probably worth noting that FundOSS was partly also funded by GitCoin so it was not free of crypto connection.
<Ursium_> thanks a lot - yeah i noticed TONS of project int he space have been in touch one way or another with gitcoin.

<ocdtrekkie> We got to FundOSS because we were already in OpenCollective, it just turned out that GitCoin funded some of it. We really haven't actively interacted with a lot in the crypto world directly.
<ocdtrekkie> I turned on the crypto contribution button in case someone wanted to use it but I don't think anyone has.
