01:58 <kentonv> ill_logic, hard to say. I think the original change was made by Jason in 2014 (the commit you linked is a later rebase). WebSocket is generally superior to all the other transports when available, and by that time pretty much all browsers supported it, so there was no reason to use anything else. But I don't recall what specific problems the others may have had.
