is anyone using direnv? it looks great but i'm concerned about a) the speed of constantly changing the shell every time you cd and b) accidentally doing something crazy

<adam12>
seydar: I used it for many years. It worked well.
<seydar>
adam12: what made you stop?
<adam12>
seydar: I do all my work in Docker now, so I use it less. I'd still reach for it if I had to.
<adam12>
Every project of mine gets a Docker file and usually a Docker Compose configuration. I use the `dip` command from Evil Martians to orchestrate it.

am i wrong for not using docker? am i being an old

For projects I leave and return to, it's just nice to have a representation of what I needed at the time.
<seydar>
a docker image fully installs everything every time, right? so if i have 30 docker images for ruby programs, i'd have 30 copies of ruby across them?
<adam12>
seydar: Not necessarily. Each line in a Dockerfile defines a layer, which has a SHA. If you use the same Ruby version across all 30 programs, then they'd all use the same base layer where the SHA matches.
<seydar>
ahah! where does docker store the layers?
<seydar>
okay this isn't #docker, i'll go look them up
<adam12>
seydar: They are tarballs on the filesystem. Basically they make the changes to the overlay file, then tar czf, then sha256sum. mv tarball <sha>
<seydar>
thank you though!
<adam12>
Yeah.
<adam12>
I refused Docker for a long time because I had been doing Ruby for like 15 years already at that point without issues.
<adam12>
But imho, it's been a life improvement.

if one can wrap their head around it

i still get dizzy whenever i'm forced to use it for something
<comeoooo1>
Yes!
<comeoooo1>
And in the broader sense the same goes for Linux
<comeoooo1>
If I may one last time: "Choose OpenBSD for your Unix needs. OpenBSD -- the world's simplest and most secure Unix-like OS. An alternatve to the vulnerabilities and overengineering of Linux and its related network services such as NGiNX/Apache, OpenSSL, iptables/nftables, systemd, BIND, Postfix and much, much more. OpenBSD -- the cleanest kernel, the cleanest userland and the cleanest configuration syntax."
<Zerock>
