<John_Ivan>
haven't seen uptimes that long on Windows ever since XP
<John_Ivan>
maximum I saw were about 2580 days
<John_Ivan>
280*
<John_Ivan>
as it "evolved" in vista, 7, 8, 10, 11, it gradually got lower and lower
<John_Ivan>
from 280 days to 40 days, to 27 days, to 14 days, to 7 days and down to 2-3 days respectively :P
<John_Ivan>
for each mentioned version above.
<John_Ivan>
Windows 12 will be a "1 day uptime" os, I tell you.
<weaksauce>
i wonder how long it would take if you did it from a "botnet" of amazon servers or the like
<John_Ivan>
wouldn't know
<John_Ivan>
anyway, I think it would be wise to partition this data into smaller sets.

leave it running for a few hours on 1000 works first. see that completed. resume the rest.
<John_Ivan>
chunked work.
<weaksauce>
that's usually the wise move
<John_Ivan>
weaksauce, the website I read comics on doesn't provide a "download all favourites" option.
<John_Ivan>
can you believe that?
<John_Ivan>
most obvious of use cases.
<John_Ivan>
they let you download individual works. but no "download all favourites."
<weaksauce>
to be fair that's 250 gigs of data
<John_Ivan>
yeah but I'm an outlier. pretty sure not everyone is gonna download that much data all at once.
<John_Ivan>
but then again...
<John_Ivan>
weaksauce, anyway, hence this spider.
<John_Ivan>
about 1500 lines of ruby code. :S
<John_Ivan>
because I don't just get the data..... I do some integrity checks, database filling, filtering of genres, etc.
<weaksauce>
dang
<John_Ivan>
weaksauce, it would've likely been far less if I did it with an ORM but I'm not 100% familiar with ruby's Active Records
<John_Ivan>
and I prefer code I can predict and work with than code I haven't tested/toyed with yet.

it seems it is my destiny to never have success on jruby. the def foo(...) syntax is not supported, i reverted to the old style, then discovered bind_call is not supported & the alternative (bind(self).call(..)) is apparently slower, noticeably so
<ox1eef>
abandoning the effort for jruby support

VALUE rb_const_get_at(VALUE klass, ID name) - so, probably const_get(rb_cObject, rb_intern("Gzip")) - something like that, which will youy give a module or class reference you can call methods on
<ox1eef>
VALUE rb_const_get(VALUE klass, ID name) rather.

Ok, Now I get it, thanks I appreciate that.
<ox1eef>
youre welcome

Is there any standard way of replacing the default regular expression engine of ruby with something like pcre2.
