<weaksauce>
i used to but getting it to work nicely with vscode was untenable

not a fan of rvm

i remember when rbenv was released, and rbenv's author called rvm "obnoxious". The RVM author really took it to heart and more or less left open source. The lesson: be kind.
<adam12>
Seems we've had that problem more than once.
<adam12>
Is ruby-core dropping minitest for test-unit? I wonder what's going on with that.
<ox1eef>
i thought test-unit was dropped for minitest. full circle.
<adam12>
ox1eef: Yeah. That's why it's unclear.
<ox1eef>
that situation is confusing for sure, even when minitest was brought in i think there was a compatibility layer in place.
<weaksauce>
that's a bit of an extreme reaction though
<ox1eef>
weaksauce: yeah, i can understand that. In this case i think he had just put his heart and soul into it, including being on irc to help people troubleshoot issues they had.
<leah2>
i wrote a tiny virtual ruby thing and never got why people would get so invested in that stuff
<weaksauce>
yeah ox1eef it's unfortunate
<weaksauce>
it's not bad software per se but it does a bit too much nowadays
<leah2>
except for one gnarly rails project my distro ruby was always good enough for my stuff
<weaksauce>
and it always seemed to break too often
<weaksauce>
so i switched to chruby
<weaksauce>
and that didn't play well with vscode
<weaksauce>
so rbenv

I've been using frum for no reason other than it's only one tool and not multiple. I only use it for having a repl conveniently at hand. Everything else ends up in a Docker DevContainer because inevitably I want it to be similar to the prod environment for what I'm working and it's just simpler. VSCode supports it out of the box and then all the
<adam12>
extensions / etc work well.

yeah, a friend swears by container technology as the way forward but i find docker to be a complex beast that cannot be easily understood - something you can learn to use, but not easily know how it is working underneath. I see hints scattered around the place, its own interfaces, its own iptables - etc.

ox1eef no... it's mainly for stuff like solargraph and debugging working seamlessly
<weaksauce>
rubocop too
<weaksauce>
but it doesn't hurt that it works well with the integrated terminal

woops, my client crashed, i was reading some of the books you recommended to code on the ruby way, and now i'm starting to understand why my code looks so similar to python
<Aylat>
first reason, camelcase everywhere hahaha
<ox1eef>
Aylat: haha okay. can you elaborate?
<Aylat>
i had a nice convrsation days ago and some folks recommended me eloquent ruby, i'm enjoying it a lot
<ox1eef>
snake_case is the convention in Ruby - i think it was borrowed from C.
