ifreund: in regards to the MVP protocol you discuss. I think you need to think about state: where does the state of what tag belongs to what window live? I think it would be a mistake to move that out of the compositor.

daurnimator: from the POV of the user, it's irrelevant were the state lives. meaning this can be judged on architecture trade-offs alone. from that POV, it makes sense to keep the server, river, as simple and stateless as possible to allow both a) clean, simple, well understood code and b) all kinds of different abstractions and window management models in the layout generator.
