hey there, I'm eager to try River's latest release (looking pretty good); unfortunately Void is lagging behind due to LLVM its version so I could only backport one XWayland patch :-(
<novakane>
just grab zig tarball from their website and build river from souce, best way on void
<gbrlsnchs>
are you using xbps-src for building that way on Void?

<novakane>
gbrlsnchs: nope, I just download a tarball of the zig version I want and use the zig build command
<novakane>
I lost hope on having a not too outdated version of zig on void
<gbrlsnchs>
I see... that means you compile river outside xbps, right? I think that'd work fine by placing the river binary in '/usr/local/bin/'... thanks for the tip!
<ifreund>
gbrlsnchs: I install river to ~/.local personally fwiw
<gbrlsnchs>
novakane: I think it's just a matter of getting LLVM updated to 14... there's a pending PR with some outstanding items... I don't know how other distros do but I think they have more workforce and thus get that sorted out faster
<gbrlsnchs>
ifreund: oh I see... I do have ~/.local/bin in my PATH, so that'd work fine as well! thanks
<ifreund>
llvm's a massive pita to package and the very capable person who has done so in the past is currently spending most of their time working on a new (very cool looking) distro
<ifreund>
void's gcc toolchain is also quite out of date :/
<ifreund>
I think I'll probably be using either chimera, alpine, or gentoo a year from now, don't really have time to mess with that stuff at the momement though
<novakane>
I also install in ~/.local like everything I build from sourcd
<novakane>
and yeah I'll probably switch someday too, I'm a bit annoyed with gcc, llvm and all of this
<ifreund>
xbps-src is pretty nice, but chimera's tooling looks even nicer
<gbrlsnchs>
what makes me stick to void right now is how easy it is to package and patch stuff... I have a few packages hosted on pages
<novakane>
I'd like chimera too, but it depends how fast a daily usable version gonna be released
<gbrlsnchs>
I've seen Chimera is based on xbps-src, so... I might give it a try when it's a little more mature
<gbrlsnchs>
Chimera's cports*
<ifreund>
it started out as a rewrite of xbps-src in python but it's way beyond that at this point
<ifreund>
it has similar principles though, I think void users will feel very at home
<novakane>
yeah xbps is still one of the best package manager I tried
<novakane>
maybe I'll try freebsd if I motivated one day though, kinda want to
<gbrlsnchs>
Chimera is musl only, right?
<novakane>
yeah
<gbrlsnchs>
yeah, whenever I have time I'll give it a try, looks really, really promising...
<gbrlsnchs>
for some reason I really like it's GNU-free

<novakane>
yeah the userland looks very cool, I'm not enough motivated to try it in its current state though
<gbrlsnchs>
I mean, does it have river yet? :-D
<novakane>
hehe that's why I'm waiting on ifreund trying it before me and fixing all problems :P
<ifreund>
I'm waiting for apk 3.0 to be released and to have more free time :D
<gbrlsnchs>
I haven't searched much yet, does it use runit for services? my whole desktop experience is glued together by local runit services :-P
<ifreund>
dinit
<ifreund>
you can of course still use runit for your local services though if you want
<gbrlsnchs>
I'd love to not have to migrate everything that Just Works x-D
<gbrlsnchs>
even rivertile is running as a local service
<novakane>
kinda related with free time and Linux but how is it going with you pinenote btw ifreund
<novakane>
gbrlsnchs: well if dinit is better, can't hurt to switch :P
<gbrlsnchs>
novakane: yeah, that makes sense
<gbrlsnchs>
I see ifreund mentioned Alpine as well. Any drawbacks compared to Void? I've never used it besides for containerization.
