<liam1312> Tenkawa: hey there! still having trouble getting Matrix to work, and Discord won't work either...I just wanted to share with you that I have a PineTab-V on the way! I'm glad RISC-V is so inexpensive, I'm very broke right now :^]
<liam1312> my partner and I are trying to write, ink, color, and edit a comic book using only RISC-V hardware
haritz is now known as saimazoon
<la_mettrie> hmm, don't those chats work easily in firefox? but maybe browser API is not enough for you...
<liam1312> this chat doesn't seem too active, and most people interested in RISC-V are developers, not layman enthusiasts such as myself
<liam1312> so i've been hesistant to ask the million questions that i have... :^]
<palmer> Just ask

<liam1312> okee dokee! here's uname -a just for reference!
<liam1312> Linux foodnotbombs-riscv64 6.6.20 #1 SMP Thu Feb 13 00:11:34 HST 2025 riscv64 GNU/Linux
<liam1312> i'm on a Framework Laptop with the Deep Computing JH7110 SoC

<liam1312> i've been very surprised how functional it is! running Fedora 41 atm. unfortunately all my regular web apps don't work--they are either throwing me "Unsupported Browser" errors or simply loading ad infinitum
<liam1312> Matrix in particular is what I'm interested in, because the Fedora RISC-V Matrix chat is very active, helpful, and friendly
<liam1312> if anyone else owns the same chip (Deep Computing JH7110) then i'd be curious to see if they have been able to use Matrix on it

<palmer> what browser are you running?
<liam1312> Firefox 131.0 (riscv64)
mlw has quit [Quit: leaving]
<la_mettrie> maybe people on firefox channels (especially development oriented) might have ideas about the nature of that problem
<liam1312> i wonder if they have IRC bridged to their Matrix, if i remeber correctly, Mozilla was really quick to adopt Matrix
<liam1312> thanks for the point in the right direction la_mettrie! although i must say that i would rather use a dedicated client... someone told me that's foolish, because Matrix clients are so similar to web browsers to begin with?
<liam1312> nheko (Matrix client) is packaged for Fedora riscv64, but i had issues with it. i might spend some time troubleshooting that...
<liam1312> what applications are y'all most anticipating on this new architecture?
<kepstin> note that there isn't really any reason for matrix clients to be similar to web browsers - e.g. Fractal doesn't have any web view component involved, and there's a number of pure text-based clients.
<kepstin> it just happens that a lot of the "desktop" versions of matrix clients are simply the web clients packaged as electron apps :(
<liam1312> thanks for the explanation! i adore flatpak, but i've had trouble using Fractal
<liam1312> (on amd64 that is, afaik there's no flatpak for riscv64)
<liam1312> very newbie questions: should i bother to type "riscv64" or do people assume that riscv refers to the 64bit ISA?
<kepstin> if you're talking about something capable of running a linux desktop, it'll basicall always be 64bit at this point. there _are_ 32bit risc-v chips, but they tend to be used only in small embedded devices (often running an rtos)
<liam1312> i have seen some papers about lower-power riscv chips in agricultural settings--very fascinating, since that's my field

<liam1312> o/
<nonzero> yo, I made it
<nonzero> now to edit my irssi autojoin heh
<liam1312> i've not messed with orange pi, what's that?
<nonzero> another pine64 competitor
<liam1312> well... i am out of money xD
<nonzero> I have only got the star-five board which I ran Nextcloud instance from for a while, however, the boot and current (as of 6 months ago) hacking it together is a little bit more than it was worth, especially getting things like nvme working. But I will be on the risc-v wagon as soon as it is a bit less hacky, I really like the look of the couple of laptops availble.
<nonzero> also, i read that as out of memory ha
<liam1312> i have the JH7110 Deep Computing SoC in my Framework 13, and then i have a spare SoC that needs one of their Coolermaster cases (only $40 thankfully)
<liam1312> i also just ordered that PineTab-V, for my partner to draw our comic!
<nonzero> how does it play?
<liam1312> nonzero: much better than i expected, but no web apps work. no audio either, but that may be my bad
<nonzero> the framework forum is normally pretty hot with support from what I remember when I had my 13 and had issues with the fingerprint reader
<liam1312> a user here recommended talking to the Mozilla folks, since ultimatly it is the browser that i'm having the most issues with
<liam1312> i need to get into the riscv channel on Fedora's Matrix server--that place is full of witches and wizards
vagrantc has joined #riscv
<palmer> liam1312: there's #fedora-riscv as well
<palmer> you could also try booting QEMU to check if it works in there, that would isolate HW problems
<liam1312> thank you so much! i wasn't aware of that channel
<liam1312> maybe i'll try out QEMU on my powerful amd64 Framework before i donate it
<palmer> ya, I'd try QEMU: if it's broken there then it's a RISC-V wide problem, otherwise it's something specific to your chip
<liam1312> heck yeah! the person getting my amd64 Framework is more savvy than i am, and they're also part of our Food Not Bombs chapter
<liam1312> our "dream" is to get a Matrix server running on riscv one day
<liam1312> right now the chapter uses Slack
