<rue_mohr>
hey
<rue_mohr>
I have a patch I did to an old version of openscad that added featuers I'd like in the new version
<rue_mohr>
but, I'd like to not have to carry them forward each version
<rue_mohr>
who do I talk to about having it added to the main rep?
<ndnihil>
what sort of features?
<rue_mohr>
its an edtra menu, "Insert" and contains "rotation", "translation", "scale" it inserts a template for each, aka ctrl-I, t -> translate([0,0,0]) with the cursor left on the X
<rue_mohr>
I'm really missing it after my debian upgrade
<rue_mohr>
I dont know how much work it'll be to carry it to the new vesion
<ndnihil>
you use the built in editor?
<rue_mohr>
yes
<rue_mohr>
wait... I'm I the only one using the built in editor?
<ndnihil>
possibly
<rue_mohr>
well damnit
<ndnihil>
vim is what all the cool kids are using
<rue_mohr>
I'm a nedit fan
<ndnihil>
fun fact, you can use any external editor
<rue_mohr>
esp after using it for 20 years and learning the whole time it had rectangular select
<ndnihil>
even emacs, if you really have some sort of self-loathing thing going on
<rue_mohr>
indeed
<rue_mohr>
didn't they all wear out their alt keys?
<ndnihil>
probably too busy sniffing their own farts to wear out any keys
<rue_mohr>
so, how do you do that without having to reload all the time?
<rue_mohr>
f4 instead of f5?
<ndnihil>
you enable the autoreload on file write option in settings
<rue_mohr>
what, I dont see it
<rue_mohr>
under editor?
<rue_mohr>
your meant preferences, right?
<ndnihil>
trying to find it
<rue_mohr>
your just teasing me...
<ndnihil>
design->automatic reload and preview
<ndnihil>
first option
<rue_mohr>
ah I was just gonna say
<rue_mohr>
hmmm, but then I'm switching windows all the time
<rue_mohr>
I have to think about this
<ndnihil>
why?
<rue_mohr>
edit -> preview -> edit ->preview
<ndnihil>
it's automagic
<ndnihil>
:w
<ndnihil>
and it reloads itself
<rue_mohr>
what
<rue_mohr>
you mean when I save the file it'll auto preview?
<ndnihil>
yup
<rue_mohr>
....
<ndnihil>
I know right?
<rue_mohr>
I think I better try this for a while then....
<ndnihil>
and there's a syntax highlighting plugin for vim
<ndnihil>
just saying
<rue_mohr>
so, just to be clear, so many devs didn't like the editor that they put a full feature set in to avoid using it?
<ndnihil>
being a programatic environment, you're going to attract a sort of user who has particular preferences in editor
<ndnihil>
the built-in is great for getting started and whatnot
<ndnihil>
but once you sink your teeth into it, you'll eventually want your editing happy place
<rue_mohr>
huh, I suppose that makes sense
<rue_mohr>
huh
<rue_mohr>
that works nicely
<ndnihil>
it's the goodness
<rue_mohr>
ok, well, thanks...
<ndnihil>
no problem
<rue_mohr>
tho I'll have you know I'll feel a void where there would have been hours and hours of extracting code changes and porting them to a few version
<ndnihil>
you can fill that void with new and interesting ways to create geometry in three dimensional space
<rue_mohr>
;)
<ndnihil>
more making the stuff, less making the making of the stuff a time filler
<rue_mohr>
I use librecad to create 2d profiles and extrude them in openscad
<rue_mohr>
took me, 5 mins? to design the clips for my new light
<ndnihil>
if I need something complicated I'll do it in inkscape and import for extrusion
<rue_mohr>
all happily sent to a machine which is probably making me a pile of spagetti in the livingroom
<ndnihil>
but most of the stuff I do is straight scad
<rue_mohr>
yea, I find the dimenstions come out better from librecad
<rue_mohr>
and omg slow csg
<rue_mohr>
extruding profiles avoids it wonderfully
<ndnihil>
yup
<ndnihil>
I have a pair of 2070supers sitting here just begging to be abused by openscad
<rue_mohr>
hah, no threads yet tho
<ndnihil>
and my poor cpu
<ndnihil>
but at least it's just the one thread

rue_mohr: If you think your templates are broadly valuable for others, you just pop a pull request up on github for it to get them evaluated for integration. Although the template files are also settable at the user level, so you should be able to just keep your config directory backed up and copy them around to where you want them, even if they are suitable only for you.
<InPhase>
rue_mohr: For example, I have a template containing a copyright notice with my name in it. :)

this just puts in the command
<rue_mohr>
so, when you want to rotate something you dont have to type the whole rotate([0,0,0]) thing
<rue_mohr>
just change the numbers to what you want
